Harry Brook named England white-ball captain to succeed Jos Buttler

Harry Brook has been named England’s new white-ball captain, seeing off competition from Ben Stokes to take charge of both the Twenty20 and one-day teams.

The 26-year-old takes over from Jos Buttler, who resigned after England’s early exit from the Champions Trophy in Pakistan in February.

Buttler remains available for selection but it will be Brook, who has made 70 appearances across the ODI and T20 formats since his debut in 2022, who will now lead England into next year’s T20 World Cup in India and Sri Lanka and the 2027 50-over version in southern Africa.

The Yorkshireman is a progressive pick by Rob Key, England’s director of cricket, and coach Brendon McCullum given he is young enough to help reshape the 50-over team ahead of that next ODI World Cup in two and a half years’ time.

Having been the standout pick ever since Buttler stepped down, it is understood he was in the running with Stokes to lead the 50-over side as England considered split captaincy across the limited-overs formats.

Picking Stokes, England’s Test captain who has been badly affected by injury in recent years, would have been a huge risk at the start of a year that includes two huge five-match Test series against India and Australia given.

In the end, though, sense has prevailed, with the only issue now managing Brook’s workload ahead of that Ashes series in Australia next winter.

Brook, who spent the past year as vice-captain to Buttler in T20 and ODI cricket, skipped this year’s Indian Premier League to give himself an extended break after a busy winter that included Test tours of Pakistan and New Zealand plus a white-ball tour of India before the Champions Trophy.

“It’s a real honour to be named England’s white-ball captain,” Brook said.

“Ever since I was a kid playing cricket at Burley in Wharfedale, I dreamed of representing Yorkshire, playing for England, and maybe one day leading the team. To now be given that chance means a great deal to me.

“I want to thank my family and coaches who’ve supported me every step of the way. Their belief in me has made all the difference and I wouldn’t be in this position without them.

“There’s so much talent in this country, and I’m looking forward to getting started, moving us forward, and working towards winning series, World Cups and major events. I’m excited to get going and give it everything I’ve got.”

The task awaiting Brook will be huge given England’s underperformance in limited-overs cricket in recent years.

Matthew Mott was sacked after surrendering both of the country’s world titles, with a shocking first-round exit from the 2023 50-over World Cup in India followed by a poor showing in last year’s T20 World Cup in the Caribbean.

McCullum then oversaw a first-round exit from the Champions Trophy alongside Buttler in his first major tournament as England’s all-format coach.

Key ‘delighted’ Brook accepted the role

“I’m delighted that Harry Brook has accepted the role as England’s white-ball captain across both formats,” Key said.

“He’s been part of our succession planning for some time, albeit this opportunity has come slightly earlier than expected.

“Harry is not only an outstanding cricketer, but also has an excellent cricketing brain and a clear vision for both teams that will help drive us towards winning more series, World Cups and major global tournaments.”

England only play six ODIs at home this summer against the West Indies and South Africa, although there are T20 series against the same two opponents and Ireland before a white-ball tour of New Zealand in October.

Brook will likely be rested for at least some of those series, especially the New Zealand trip that takes place just before the Ashes in Australia.
