Reunion cast, filming locations and episode guide

The BBC is about to premier a new bilingual thriller which puts the deaf community at the heart of the story.

Reunion is a four-part revenge thriller, told in spoken English and British Sign Language, through the perspective of Daniel Brennan, a deaf man who becomes isolated from society both physically and emotionally.

Hell-bent on revenge after being released from prison, Brennan must choose between vengeance and redemption through his relationship with his daughter.

Written and created by Sheffield-born deaf writer William Mager, it stars Matthew Gurney, Lara Peake, Anne-Marie Duff, Eddie Marsan and Rose Ayling-Ellis.

Gurney said: “Reunion is an amazing storyline and is completely different from my previous work.

“My character Brennan is on a wildly different journey than that portrayed by normal deaf lives, this portrays a man who is hated within the deaf community.

“It shows how deaf people react and act on screen in an honest and authentic way.

“We are different to hearing actors, we are so much more visual storytellers, it’s not about relying on sound it’s about using your eyes and seeing what is going on in the story.”

Reunion is the story of a man called Daniel Brennan.

He was convicted of killing his best friend Ray and had has just been released from prison after serving 10 years.

His imprisonment has seen him lose his family, his friends and his connection to the deaf community.

Now he’s on a journey of revenge.

But that journey changes course after he is reunited with his daughter

William Mager, the show’s creator, said: “It starts as a typical story of revenge, and then it becomes something bigger and more powerful.

“Reunion also shows the power of the deaf community.

“It can be a place of safety where you feel you can be your authentic self, but when Brennan’s excluded from that, it becomes a very different thing for him, something more judgmental and claustrophobic, they’ve turned against him.

“It was interesting for us to explore this and how you deal with being rejected by the community that you love.”

He said: “What I wanted to do was write a love letter to my hometown, Sheffield.

“To show those amazing locations that I remember from my childhood but also show that there’s a strong deaf community here in Sheffield.

“We’ve used a lot of deaf people who live and work here as part of Reunion, which was important for me.

“I grew up here and I lived here for 22 years.

“One thing I always loved about Sheffield was the contrast.

“The centre of town has lots of old buildings from the industrial past, the steel industry, and then five minutes’ drive out of the centre and you’re in the countryside, it’s beautiful, it’s green and the contrast of that is so surprising for me.”

Filming took place around the South Yorkshire city, famed for its steel industry, including at South Street Park, outside Sheffield City Hall, at Hell’s Kitchen Diner on East Bank Road and Tapton Hall near Crosspool.

Some filming also took place in the nearby city of Doncaster.

And areas of the Peak District also feature heavily in the show, in contrast to the urban shots, including Winnats Pass.

Mark Herbert, executive producer, said: “One of the things that was amazing in this production was that it’s not just showing the grimy bits of Sheffield that are often shown on TV, but it’s actually showing the beauty in the Peak District.

“Billy wanted to show Sheffield’s beauty as well as its industrial heart and I love that contrast.”
