Latest ESPN poaching of Fox NFL Sunday star causes network chaos and continues to reveal live TV sports media landscape

ESPN hasn’t stopped grabbing Fox as well as another key TV network’s talented contributors to be part of their programming.

That point was only evident this week when ESPN announced the addition of a veteran from Fox Sports, who’s not the only network feeling the heat.

ESPN recently hired former NFL Network and Fox NFL insider and analyst Peter Schrager to be a contributor to its football programmingGetty APFox NFL Sunday lost Schrager, who appeared on the hit program, as Fox and NFL Network have been hit with losses to its talent[/caption]

ESPN announced the addition of NFL insider and analyst Peter Schrager on Tuesday after he revealed a day earlier that he would leave NFL Network’s Good Morning Football.

Schrager will work on ESPN’s NFL coverage and appear on numerous shows, including Get Up, First Take, and The Pat McAfee Show, among others.

ESPN’s poaching of the former Fox NFL Sunday veteran Schrager shocked some, but it shouldn’t have. The network has continued its dominance in the live TV sports media landscape.

In 2022, the Disney-owned company signed Joe Buck and Troy Aikman to be its Monday Night Football commentators, a move that saw the pair leave Fox after 20 years together.

ESPN signed Shannon Sharpe to be part of First Take and other programming after being a star on Fox from 2016 to 2023.

The network plucked away Artie Kempner from Fox to be its chief content officer.

Kempner is now the new director of MNF.

And ESPN has signed Pat McAfee and Stephen A. Smith to multi-year contract deals.

Fox Sports hasn’t been the only network to watch its talent leave to eventually join ESPN.

NFL Network saw Schrager and Jason McCourty – both former GMFB co-hosts – sign with ESPN.

The NFL-owned television network has experienced far worse obstacles, however, as they’ve made numerous cuts since 2023.

The NFL has trimmed NFL Network’s payroll and has looked for a company to take over the operation.

So who might that be? ESPN. That’s who.

Discussions between ESPN and the NFL over the Worldwide Leader’s potential acquisition of NFL Media have ramped up.

It’s expected that ESPN’s deal to acquire NFL Media could be as much as $2 billion and see the NFL take an ownership stake in Disney‘s network.

    NFL important dates 2025 season

March 12 - Free Agency begins

April 24-26 – NFL Draft in Green Bay, Wisconsin

September 4 – 2025 season opener (TBC vs Eagles)

November 27 – Thanksgiving Day triple header

    January 4, 2026 – End of regular-season

February 8, 2026 – Super Bowl LX at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, California

Content is the name of the game, and ESPN’s live TV sports programming, which includes First Take, NFL Live, MNF, and The Pat McAfee Show and its streaming platform, ESPN +, moves needles – hence their domination.

The potential acquisition could help the NFL keep its over-four-decade-long coverage of the NFL Draft.

ESPN will also broadcast its first Super Bowl in 2027.

Despite the losses in talent, Fox Sports still broadcasts the Super Bowl, including the most recent one, is the exclusive home of MLB‘s World Series, and has lucrative broadcast deals with various sports, including college football.

Fox NFL Sunday is a powerhouse pregame NFL show, and the company saw success in Tom Brady‘s first year as a broadcaster.

Fox will also compete with ESPN, YouTube, and Amazon to acquire the NFL Draft rights.

But ESPN has been a force in the live TV sports media landscape, and it appears that it will not slow down anytime soon.
