Trump admin mistakenly threatens deportation of Ukrainians

The Trump administration's Department of Homeland Security (DHS) mistakenly sent out an email informing some Ukrainian refugees that their temporary legal status in the United States was being revoked.

The notice letter, which threatened deportation and the loss of work permits, was retracted after DHS admitted it had been sent in error.

The DHS targeted Ukrainians who had entered the US under the Biden administration's Uniting for Ukraine (U4U) program, which was launched in response to Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

Under this initiative, around 240,000 Ukrainians were allowed to enter the country with temporary parole status, which is granted on humanitarian grounds and for a set period.

On April 3, several people received an alarming message that read: "The DHS is now exercising its discretion to terminate your parole."

It also gave recipients seven days to leave, warning that failure to comply would result in "potential law enforcement actions" and removal from the US unless they had obtained a different immigration status.

The notice also indicated that once their parole was terminated, the individuals would lose their work permits and could face the threat of deportation if they failed to self-deport using a government smartphone app known as CBP Home.

The email added: "Do not attempt to remain in the United States - the federal government will find you."

Following the mishap, the DHS clarified that the notices had been sent out by mistake in a statement. The department said: "A message was sent in error to some Ukrainians under the U4U program. The U4U parole program has not been terminated." In the follow-up email, recipients were told that "no action will be taken concerning your parole".

It remains unclear how many Ukrainians were affected by the mixup, but the incident has raised significant concerns among advocates for refugee and immigrant rights.

While the Trump administration has not officially terminated the U4U program, it has suspended new admissions and status renewals for individuals already in the US under the program. This has led to fears that more attempts to undermine or dismantle protections for Ukrainians could be implemented.

It comes as Donald Trump continues to curtail immigration programs introduced by the Biden administration. In recent months, the new government has taken steps to suspend or limit other parole-based programs, including those for Cubans, Haitians, Nicaraguans, and Venezuelans.

The Trump administration has also warned migrants who entered the US under these programs that they must leave by April 24 or face the possibility of arrest and deportation.
