Israel changes story on Rafah medic killings, says will probe

The Israeli military has revised its account of a deadly attack in Rafah, southern Gaza, that killed 15 medics and civil defence workers, following the release of damning video evidence.

The footage, published by The New York Times and sourced from a senior UN diplomat, contradicts Israel’s initial claims and has prompted the army to announce an "internal investigation".

The video, reportedly recovered from the phone of one of the slain medics, shows clearly marked ambulances and fire trucks with flashing lights — and medics in uniform — coming under heavy gunfire.

The visual evidence undermines Israel's earlier claims that its soldiers fired on vehicles approaching "suspiciously" in the dark without clear markings, claiming the victims were fighters from Hamas and Islamic Jihad "using Red Crescent vehicles".

In its revised narrative, the Israeli army now says it is reviewing the incident, with the investigation led by Southern Command chief Yaniv Asor and findings expected to be submitted to Chief of Staff Herzi Halevi.

Initially, military spokesperson Nadav Shoshani said troops had fired on vehicles that advanced without headlights or emergency signals, suspecting they carried armed fighters.

He insisted the forces had not targeted ambulances indiscriminately. However, the newly revealed footage and subsequent outcry have cast doubt on that version of events.

According to Israeli sources, on 23 March, a Golani Brigade unit was positioned in a Rafah ambush site when ambulances coordinated with the army passed by.

Later that day, Israeli forces reportedly fired on a police vehicle belonging to Hamas and subsequently on a convoy of emergency vehicles they believed was connected.

Israeli broadcaster Kan 11 reported that following the massacre, a deputy battalion commander covered the ambulances with camouflage netting and passed coordinates to UN personnel for recovery of the bodies. However, the bodies were not found immediately.

An Israeli D9 bulldozer later buried the ambulances and corpses under sand, which the army claimed was standard practice to prevent stray animals from disturbing the remains. This claim was met with scepticism, given previous footage showing Israeli soldiers laughing as dogs fed on Palestinian corpses.

After retrieving the bodies, the army claimed to have used facial recognition technology to determine that six of the 15 killed were "Hamas members". Critics questioned how the army could identify individuals in the dark prior to the killings, highlighting inconsistencies in the official narrative.

The massacre, which has drawn international outrage, has come to symbolise the dangers faced by Gaza’s emergency workers and the mounting documentation of possible war crimes.

The Israeli army's belated announcement of an internal investigation is being viewed by many as a damage-control effort, following irrefutable evidence contradicting its initial statements.
