Purdue PG Braden Smith edges out multiple SEC stars for national honor

Purdue’s Braden Smith isn’t playing this weekend in San Antonio for the top team prize, but he was named the top point guard in college basketball on Saturday. The Boilermakers’ gritty playmaker was honored by winning the Bob Cousy Award, given annually to the best point guard in the country.

Smith captured the award over an elite cast of finalists that included SEC stalwarts Walter Clayton Jr. of Florida, Zakai Zeigler of Tennessee and Mark Sears of Alabama. Marquette’s Kam Jones filled out the field of 5 finalists for the prestigious award.

Smith is the first winner of the Bob Cousy Award from Purdue and the first recipient from the Big Ten since Illinois’s Ayo Dosunmu in 2021. Dosunmu was also the last non-senior to receive the honor before Smith’s breakthrough this year.

Smith meant everything to Purdue this season in helping the Boilermakers get to the Sweet 16, where they fell by 2 points to Final Four team Houston. Smith averaged 15.8 points and 8.7 assists per game, and he was a stellar rebounder for a guard who’s only 6-feet, averaging 4.5 boards per contest.

If it seemed Smith never took a breather during games this season, that’s because he averaged 37.0 minutes per game. He shot a solid 38.1% from 3-point territory this season and was great from the free-throw line, too, making 83.3% from the charity stripe.
