Egypt proposes Gaza truce as Israel intensifies ground attacks

Egypt has proposed a new ceasefire and prisoner exchange deal between Israel and Hamas and other Palestinian groups in the Gaza Strip, Israeli media reported on Friday.

This is the latest Egyptian proposition since Israel renewed its attacks on the enclave in mid-March, breaking a two-month ceasefire and killing over 1,000 people.

According to Israeli broadcaster Kan, Cairo, a key original mediator in the Israel-Hamas deal, reportedly submitted the proposal "to bridge the gaps between Israel and Hamas."

The report added that "the new proposal was submitted by Egypt within the past 24 hours to reach a consensus between Israel and Hamas."

Kan did not disclose further details or specific conditions of the Egyptian deal but emphasised that it nearly aligned with the offer made by Egypt and Qatar for the release of five living Israeli captives, as well as Israel's proposal that Hamas release 11 captives currently in Gaza.

Egypt has yet to publicly comment on the report.

On the other hand, Reuters, citing a Palestinian source, reported on Friday that efforts to resume negotiations, mediated by Egypt and Qatar, have stalled.

The source informed the agency that "there are currently no contacts" between the involved parties.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is scheduled to meet US President Donald Trump this week during his visit to Washington, an Israeli official informed Kan on Saturday, seemingly confirming a report by Axios.

This will be Netanyahu’s fourth visit to the US since the start of the Gaza war.

If the meeting proceeds as planned, he will be the first foreign leader to meet Trump in person to discuss negotiating a deal aimed at removing tariffs.

Trump's latest tariffs, the most extensive to date, are set to take effect and could potentially lead to retaliation, escalating trade tensions that threaten to destabilise the global economy.

    Israel continues massacres

A brutal new Israeli military attack on 18 March brought an end to a brief ceasefire in the ongoing war on Gaza.

Israel has says it is attempting to "dissect" Gaza and capture more territory in the devastated enclave claiming it is part of a strategy to pressure Palestinian operatives into releasing the remaining Israelis held captive.

Hundreds of thousands of displaced Palestinians have been forced to flee their shelters as a result, while scores more have been massacred.

On Friday, Hamas issued a warning regarding the escalating situation in Gaza, stating that Israel's offensive was creating a "highly dangerous" environment for the captives held there.

The group’s spokesperson, Abu Obeida, explained that half of the living Israeli captives were located in areas Israel had recently ordered to be evacuated.

He added that Hamas had chosen not to transfer the detainees but emphasised the perilous nature of their situation.

Israel’s military announced the launch of a ground offensive into Gaza City on Friday expanding its operations.

At least 30 people were reported killed across Palestinian territory since Saturday morning.

The Israeli army stated that ground troops were operating in the Shujaiya area of Gaza City to "expand the security zone" within the region.

In southern Gaza, a single strike on Nasser Hospital in Khan Younis killed at least 25 people, according to a medical source cited by AFP.

Israel has yet to provide a clear explanation of its long-term objectives for the areas it is currently seizing as part of a security zone, which extends the existing buffer area along the edge of the Gaza Strip by several hundred metres.

Residents of Gaza have expressed growing concerns, fearing that the goal is to permanently depopulate large sections of land, including some of the enclave's last remaining farmland and vital water infrastructure.

These concerns have been further fuelled by claims that Israel’s operations align with plans put forward by Trump.

In February, the US leader suggested the forced displacement of Gaza’s population into neighbouring countries and proposed transforming the enclave into a waterfront resort under US control, a proposal that sparked widespread outrage across the Arab world.

The recent escalation has resulted in the deaths of 1,309 Palestinians and 3,184 injuries, according to Gaza's health ministry.

This brings the total death toll to 50,669 Palestinians, with 115,225 wounded, since the conflict began on 7 October 2023.
