ANAHEIM — The Michelle Carew Classic has given the Rosary softball team an opportunity to showcase its offense.
Rosary collected 11 hits, including a three-run homerun from K’lene Gutierrez that broke the game open in the sixth, for an 8-1 victory over Los Alamitos in the quarterfinals Friday at Peralta Park.
The Royals (14-2-1) duplicated their run total from their 8-5 victory over Eastvale Roosevelt in a second-round contest Thursday.
Rosary will play Fullerton in the semifinals at 1:15 p.m. Saturday. The Indians defeated JSerra, 5-1, in the quarterfinals Friday.
Orange Lutheran will face Norco in the other semifinal Saturday. The championship game is at 7:30 p.m. Saturday at Peralta Park.
“We’re preaching putting the ball in play on the ground,” Rosary coach Tom Tice said. “And we’re not striking out. We only struck out once today and once in the last game. So, when you put it in play, line drives happen. We had a line drive over the fence. Not too many pop-ups. We’re just putting the ball in play hard.”
Because of the tournament’s one-hour, 45-minute time limit, the game was called after six innings.
Rosary, the designated road team, took advantage of miscues by the Griffins early in the contest.
Domonique McCoy, who went 3 for 3, singled to lead off the second and then came around to score the Royals’ first run later in the inning on a wild throw to third.
Hailey Huerta and Hayden Huerta hit back-to-back singles to lead off the third and then both scored on wild pickoff throw and an error in the outfield on the same play, making the score 3-0.
Los Alamitos got a run back on Morgan Fitzpatrick’s home run in the third.
The Royals then put the game away with a five-run sixth that included Gutierrez’s three-run shot and a two-run single from Jenna Caldera.
“The last at-bat I had struck out on that outside pitch,” said Gutierrez, a 2024 All-CIF-SS Division 2 honoree, who came into the tournament batting .585. “So, I knew I had to go up there and make an adjustment. And I was just going to go back to the basics and stay simple. I got an outside pitch and I drove it that way.”
Rosary pitcher Ava Phillips got stronger as the game went on.
After giving up the home run to Fitzpatrick, Phillips didn’t give up another hit until there were two outs in the sixth.
The right-hander allowed three hits, no walks and had six strikeouts over six innings.
“It helps me to be able to expand the zone more because I feel more comfortable with having bases open and it’s not a close game,” said Phillips, about pitching with a large lead. “I know we have room to play with and work different sequences and that’s where my coach comes in and helps me work different sequences by calling those pitches.”
