An assault suspect fled and holed up in a nearby home in East County Friday, prompting an ongoing SWAT standoff.
The 35-year-old man, the subject of an outstanding arrest warrant, ran off in an attempt to evade arrest in the 900 block of Gillespie Drive in Spring Valley shortly before 10:30 a.m., according to the San Diego County Sheriff’s Office.
After the suspect refused for about an hour to exit the residence and surrender, a special weapons and tactics team was called in, Lt. Patrick Fox said.
Deputies closed a stretch of the street in front of the house while trying to make contact with the suspect, who did not respond to them but apparently texted family members during the impasse, the lieutenant said.
The man, whose name was not immediately available, is known to carry a gun, but it was unclear if he was armed during the standoff, according to sheriff’s officials. He is believed to be alone in the house.
