When it comes to buying a home, the stressful process of ongoing decisions can overwhelm you. One of the most critical choices you’ll make is whether or not to hire a moving company when it comes time to move your possessions into your new home. Although hiring a moving company may be the easiest option, doing it yourself could save you money. There are many factors to consider before making this decision, and we’ll break down the pros and cons of both hiring and doing it yourself.

The pros of moving yourself

Saves cash: Moving without a moving company could save you money if you’re not flush with cash after buying your new home. If you have friends who can help you with the move, you might be able to get some furniture moved for a lower price. You’ll also need to find a moving truck. It’s all up to you: Doing it yourself could also give you complete control over how everything is done. You’ll also be able to take the time to pack and care for your possessions as you see fit. Doing it yourself could also give you more flexibility when moving. However, it’s important to note that moving yourself long distances can be very challenging.

    The cons of moving yourself

It’s physical labor: One of the most significant downsides of moving yourself is the work involved in moving your possessions. Not having the proper equipment and knowledge will make it harder to get the job done. You’ll also likely still need help moving large items, and this can be a bit challenging if you have to move up or down a staircase.  Potential delays: Not having the proper equipment and knowledge can make it hard to get the job done. If you’re not familiar with moving a large item or taking it apart, you could add some unnecessary stress to your day. If you don’t have enough time to move all of your possessions, there could be additional fees if you don’t return the truck at the agreed time.

The pros of hiring professional movers

Let someone else do it: Having a professional moving company will allow you to leave all of the intricate details to them, and they’ll be able to get the job done efficiently and effectively. They can even handle all the packing. Probably faster: A professional moving company will be able to pack and move your possessions faster than you could on your own. They should arrive on time, complete the job in the estimated time frame and make a move less stressful.

The cons of hiring professional movers

Cost: Getting a professional moving company can be very expensive if you’re moving a long distance. Even if they’re local, the cost of moving isn’t going to be cheap. Also, give the movers a tip if they perform well – that’s proper etiquette. On their schedule: When you use a moving company, they will have to fit you into their schedule. Not being able to pick up and deliver your items at the most convenient time can cause you to wait longer. If you’re moving across the country, the company might have other stops along the way that can delay the arrival of your goods. Spring and summer are peak times for people to move, so anticipate added wait times during the busier seasons.

Although you might think that moving yourself is cheaper than hiring a professional moving company, it could actually be more costly. Consider what is best for you and your move, get quotes from several moving companies, and look at the potential costs of doing it yourself. If you are in need of a local, trusted moving company, let me know!  I have some great recommendations and they have some great options if you are not ready right now but need to store some items while you are organizing.  A little pre-planning will definitely make the process less stressful in the long run. Happy moving!
