Legendary Australian wicketkeeper-batter Adam Gilchrist poked fun at Ricky Ponting in front of former England captain Michael Vaughan, and interestingly, the matter was centered around the Indian Premier League (IPL).
Both Adam Gilchrist and Ricky Ponting had the honor to play in the IPL, and even the latter led the Deccan Chargers to the title in 2009. On the other hand, Ponting has been coaching the top teams in the tournament for years but has yet to taste success as the head coach despite being one of the all-time greatest captains in the international arena.
Ponting had won three ODI World Cups. The legendary batter won the prestigious trophy as a player in 1999 but won back-to-back titles as Australia's captain in the 2003 and 2007 editions of the World Cup.

He has won the most ICC trophies as a captain in men’s cricket. Ricky Ponting also led Australia to an incredible run of 26 matches without a single loss in 50-over World Cup games. Despite his incredible achievements, Gilchrist downplayed his former teammate’s title glories hilariously, as he has not won the IPL trophy as a captain.
Gilchrist stunned the cricket world with a jaw-dropping claim, boldly claiming that winning an IPL trophy is tougher than lifting a World Cup before taking a playful dig at Ponting.

I’ll tell you, it’s a lot harder to win an IPL trophy than a World Cup. You heard it right here on Club Prairie Fire. Sorry, Punter (Ricky Ponting), he captained about 8 World Cups.”
The fun didn’t stop as Vaughan hilariously fumbled his IPL facts. In a light-hearted exchange, Vaughan questioned if Gilly had ever won the IPL, saying, “Did you win an IPL? It was for… Decan Warriors or whatever?” The Englishman got the name of the now-defunct Deccan Chargers completely wrong.
Gilchrist instantly fired back with a laugh at Vaughan by saying, “Jesus Christ, are we serious? Are we cricket experts here? You’ve just offended the whole town of Hyderabad. Yeah, I just lifted the trophy, came last the first year, and then won the second year.”

To which, the former England captain hilariously noted, “My research didn’t go down to the depths of the Deccan Warriors. I didn’t get in the brief that it was just IPL; I thought it was captaincy in general. I had to go with Pat Cummins (as the best ever IPL captain). MS Dhoni was my pick over Rohit Sharma, which triggered a bit of a debate.”
Notably, Rohit Sharma and MS Dhoni both won five IPL trophies as captain with the Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings, respectively. On the other hand, Gilchrist became the second Australian captain to win the IPL trophy as captain after Shane Warne led Rajasthan Royals to the title in 2008.
