AUSTIN (KXAN) -- In an exclusive interview with KXAN Thursday, Gov. Greg Abbott is expected to talk about plans to allow parents to use tax dollars to help pay for private school. The interview comes just hours after a Texas House committee advanced one of the governor's top legislative priorities, education savings accounts.
Abbott will speak with KXAN on Thursday evening. The interview will be aired live on KXAN News at 5 p.m. and streamed online in this story and on Facebook.
Abbott laid out his priorities for lawmakers in February during his State of the State address, with Senate lawmakers pushing through one of his top priorities days later. Texas Senators voted to approve Senate Bill 2, the piece of legislation carrying an education savings account (ESA) program.

Thursday afternoon, the Texas House Committee on Public Education approved House Bill 2, to increase funding to public education, and SB 2, which would establish an ESA program. ESAs will allow parents to pay a portion of the cost of private school with tax dollars.
School choice and school finance meeting will not be streamedOn Thursday afternoon, the committee voted 13-2 in favor of HB 2. SB 2 passed in a 9-6 party-line vote.
Due to the committee's decision to not livestream the meeting, Texans across the state had to show up in person to hear the deliberation, or watch live feeds from news outlets like KXAN.
“These are the two most consequential bills in this legislative session — this voucher bill will defund public schools across the state of Texas, and there have been last minute changes made to these two important pieces of legislation,” State Rep. James Talarico, D-Austin, said.
