Greeley Mayor John Gates issues water conservation challenge

As the city of Greeley continues to explore ways to manage residential water consumption, the city announced the National Mayor’s Challenge for Water Conservation.

The nonprofit challenge, which runs throughout April, encourages residents to reduce pollution and promote smart water use. The challenge is presented by the Wyland Foundation and supported by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, The Toro Company and Zenni Optical.

As part of the challenge, Greeley will perform several outreach strategies to encourage residents to take on the challenge. Residents can register and participate by making online pledges to decrease their water use and pollution for one year.

“The national competition amongst similarly sized cities is a fun way to see who can get the highest percentage of residents to take the Mayor’s Challenge,” Mayor John Gates said in a video announcing the challenge.

Greeley has participated in this challenge for the past 10 years and has consistently placed in the top five across the nation, placing fifth in 2023. Gates isn’t shocked by the city’s performance, as Greeley has a long history of water conservation and many active water conservation projects currently underway.

One such project mentioned in the announcement was the University of Northern Colorado’s large-scale turf replacement project. This project will replace more than 3 acres of Kentucky bluegrass in favor of native grasses and prairie flowers and is estimated to save nearly 2 million gallons of water annually.

“Protecting our water resources is extremely important to me,” Gates said. “This is my last Mayor’s Water Challenge as your mayor, and we need your help to finish No. 1.”

The challenge offers several ways people can pledge to save water, including repairing leaking faucets, pipes and toilets; wasting less food; turning off sprinklers when it rains; walking, biking or using the bus more often; and much more.
