CINCINNATI Bengals star Trey Hendrickson sent a brutal message to his team amid a dilemma with his potential future contract.
The 30-year-old Hendrickson broke his silence on the Bengals‘ executive vice president Katie Blackburn’s latest words on contract negotiations with the four-time NFL Pro Bowl defensive end.
Blackburn appeared at the NFL’s annual league meeting on Tuesday and sent a message to Hendrickson, saying it’s up to him to be happy at the “certain rates” he’s been offered.
She implied that Hendrickson, who’s seeking a contract extension and will be in the final year of his current deal in 2025, has been the reason why talks have stalled, as he’s asked for more money.
Hendrickson appeared on ESPN’s The Pat McAfee Show and addressed Blackburn’s comments, saying he hoped her words were an April Fool’s joke.
“That was a little disappointing because communication has been poor over the last couple of months,” Hendrickson added.
“That’s something I hold in high regard.
“They have not communicated with my agent directly. But again, this is the business of it.”
Hendrickson also brought up OTAs, which start in May, and that he wants to fill the void that Sam Hubbard created when he retired, indicating he might not show up to the offseason workouts without a new contract.
“I’m excited to fill that [void], but how do we reach that before we get there?” he asked.
“And those are the things that matter.
“When you’re talking about a Super Bowl, it’s in the little things and the little details.”
NFL fans reacted to Hendrickson’s jaw-dropping comments on live television.
“He is a true professional and someone they can’t let get away. Sign the man!” one wrote.
“His deal should’ve been done last year,” another commented.
“He is pissed,” a third said.
The Bengals-Hendrickson contract conflict comes after the team gave big extensions to offensive stars Ja’Marr Chase and Tee Higgins last month.
Hendrickson demanded a trade for a second straight year, but this year, the Bengals granted his request.
He is coming off a career season, posting an NFL-best 17.5 sacks.
In 2023, Hendrickson signed a one-year extension to the original four-year, $60 million deal he penned with Cincinnati in 2021.
This season, he is set to receive $15.8 million in base salary and a $200,000 roster bonus.
