Huntington Beach volleyball makes CIF-SS rankings look good in win over CdM

HUNTINGTON BEACH — The computer-based rankings that the CIF Southern Section is using now in many teams sports are frequently criticized.

The CIF-SS boys volleyball rankings looked good, and accurate, Wednesday at Huntington Beach High.

Huntington Beach, No. 2 in the CIF-SS rankings, beat No. 4 Corona del Mar in four sets, 25-18, 18-25, 25-15, 25-20, in a Sunset League match at Huntington Beach High.

The Oilers improved to 24-2 overall and 8-0 in league. Their losses are to CIF-SS No. 1 Mira Costa and to No. 3 Loyola.

Corona del Mar is 13-5 overall, 6-2 in league. Both of the Sea Kings’ league losses are to Huntington Beach.

Logan Hutnick, a 6-6 sophomore outside hitter who is the Oilers’ kills leader, and 6-4 junior opposite hitter Ben Arguello led the team’s offensive attack. Huntington Beach 6-5 senior setter Kai Gan and 6-0 junior outside hitter Colin Choi were among the other top contributors Wednesday.

Corona del Mar’s attack was paced by 6-4 outside hitter Ben Brown and 6-2 junior outside hitter Brady Gant, with senior libero Brogan Glenn and junior setter Drake Foley playing as solid as usual.

Hutnick liked the enthusiasm and determination the Oilers displayed Wednesday.

“I think we were really energetic,” Hutnick said. “I really liked the way our bench got into it. They were very hyped and helped us get momentum and finish off the points we needed to finish.”

Two Arguello spikes off of fine sets by Choi and Aiden Atencio provided important points in the middle of the first set. Corona del Mar battled back to take a 14-13 lead. The Gan-to-Hutnick connection led the Oilers to a strong finish in the first set.

The Sea Kings were better at getting the ball to Brown and Gant provided some clutch blocks in the second set that they won.

Huntington Beach took an early lead in the third set and was in complete control as it went ahead 2-1 in sets.

“You never want to see a letdown after basically dominating the first set,” Oilers coach Craig Pazanti said. “And that’s all it takes against good teams. If you’re playing a good team that little bit of letdown can be all it takes to swing a one- or two-point game. We got back to what we do best, and that’s serve tough and pass the ball well.”

Corona del Mar junior outside hitter Hunter Hanneman was strong at the net in the fourth set but the Oilers outscored the Sea Kings 6-1 down the stretch to win it 25-20 and clinch the match.

Pazanti liked how his team played with determination.

“We didn’t have much energy last night against Los Al,” said Pazanti, referring to Huntington Beach’s 3-0 win over Los Alamitos on Tuesday. “I said ‘If you come out like that again tonight you’re not going to be able to hold on just on basic ability alone.’ We had to come in with a better mind frame.”

Corona del Mar has a league match at home Friday against Newport Harbor. Huntington Beach is home against Downey on Friday in a nonleague match. The Oilers resume league play Tuesday at home against Marina.
