Katie Thurston Fields Questions About Surrogacy, Kids Amid Cancer Battle

Katie Thurston is opening up about the different avenues she and husband Jeff Arcuri have discussed to expand their family after her stage 4 breast cancer battle is treated.

Thurston, 34, shared a screenshot of a social media exchange via her Instagram Stories on Wednesday, April 2, in which she was asked how she “can afford surrogacy.” (The former Bachelorette previously said in a post last month that a gestational carrier may be her best option to have a baby after undergoing chemotherapy.)

“No idea how much it is. We haven’t even begun to cross this path,” Thurston replied in Wednesday’s screenshot. “No idea how much adoption is. Both are very expensive. And both take time.”

She continued, “Surrogacy isn’t even a guarantee that the embryo makes it to term. I have a year ahead of me, so it’ll be a while until we explore options.”

Thurston was diagnosed with stage 3 breast cancer in February. Knowing that she’d need chemo and additional surgeries to treat the tumors, she and Arcuri, 36, opted to do a round of in vitro fertilization (IVF) first to preserve fertility.

“It does raise the risk of you not being able to conceive. And so we [knew] that we wanted kids in the future. We thought, ‘OK, well let’s do IVF just to have that option,’” Thurston exclusively told Us Weekly in March. “We dedicated two weeks before doing anything else breast cancer-wise to doing IVF.”

After doing “10 days of just shots,” Thurston and Arcuri retrieved 17 eggs and six became fertilized embryos at RMA of New York. Only two ended up being viable.

Late last month, Thurston underwent a PET scan that revealed her cancer had spread to her liver, which elevated her illness to stage 4. She will next start her treatment before even considering the best avenues to have children.

“Maybe parenthood isn’t in the cards for us,” she added on Wednesday. “If there is anything I’ve learned in two months, it’s that you can make all the plans you want, but life is gonna do its thing.”

Thurston further noted that she and Arcuri would likely try to use their two stored embryos before looking into adoption.

“There are many emotional, physical and financial layers to parenthood,” she responded to another social media user in a DM screenshotted and shared via her Instagram Stories on Wednesday. “We will cross each bridge as we go.”

Before Thurston starts her treatment, she wed Arcuri following their 2024 engagement.

“We were wanting to plan a wedding and there’s a lot of emotions that come in with chemo and the impact and the health and we don’t know what the next year looks like,” Thurston told Us last month, two days before their nuptials. “And one night he said, ‘I want to show you that I still love you and that I’m here to stay. I’ll get married to you tomorrow.’ We flew our parents in from Michigan and Washington State. We got our marriage license and a friend is just gonna marry us.”

She continued, “It was this kind gesture of him saying, truly, in sickness and in health. He is proving that he’s here to stay. He shows up every day and he does it in ways that just continue to surprise.”

Arcuri also thought it was important to marry Thurston before she started chemo.

“I want to be able to be in the hospital with her and just be like, ‘My wife’s in there.’ There’s more power to that,” Arcuri told Us. “I don’t want to be not with you for any of this.”
