Donald Trump is expected to roll out America’s most expansive set of tariffs in a century, with Sir Keir Starmer saying the UK has “ruled nothing out” in its response.
The US president is due to speak at 9pm as he prepares to lay out the new tariffs, due to hit most of America’s major trading partners, including Britain, on what Trump has dubbed “Liberation Day”.
As he joined world leaders in bracing for the shake-up in global trade, the prime minister said he would take a “calm, pragmatic approach” to avoid a trade war –but told the House of Commons today that the UK has “ruled out nothing”.
Starmer has so far not announced any plans for reciprocal tariffs, unlike the EU, which has a “strong plan to retaliate”, according to its Commission’s President Ursula von der Leyen.

Callum MasonDeputy Money EditorHere is a quick look at how consumers and retail prices in the UK might be affected:
Whisky
Scotch whisky is the biggest British food and drink export to the US, with a market value of about £1 billion annually.
Under the previous Trump administration, the US imposed a 25 per cent tariff on Scotch whisky exports, which cost the industry £600 million in sales. Prices could rise if companies decide to pass the increased costs onto consumers.
Food
Britain is a major exporter of salmon, chocolate and cheese to America. Around 6,000 tonnes of cheddar was shipped to the US last year.
The fear is that these products are price sensitive, and 20 per cent tariffs would result in significant reductions in sales – pushing up prices for US shoppers, which could have a knock-on effect on people in the UK.
Cars and steel
Britain exports more than £6.4 billion worth of cars to the US every year, and it is a critical market for high-end manufacturers such as Jaguar Land Rover, Mini, Bentley and Rolls-Royce.
