Pulse cast and episode guide for Netflix medical drama

Heart rates will be soaring for fans of ER, Grey’s Anatomy and Scrubs as a new medical drama drops on Netflix.

Pulse premiers this week, bringing a volatile mix of emergency department action and workplace romance to the small screen.

Created by Emmy winner Carlton Cuse and writer Zoe Robyn, the show focuses on trainee doctors based in a medical centre in Florida where professional ambitions and personal relationships complicate an already tension-filled emergency department.

Cuse told Netflix’s Tudum: “Nowadays, your work family can really be, apart from your literal family, the most important community you have.

“The complications that arise — between what’s going on off the clock and on the clock — can get messy.

“It can get confusing. That’s what we wanted to explore with Pulse.”

Pulse follows third-year medical resident Danny (Willa Fitzgerald) as she navigates life and works in the emergency department of Maguire Medical Centre in Miami.

Described by the show’s writer Zoe Robyn as “flawed and fallible”, Danny is unexpectedly promoted when respected chief resident Dr Xander Phillips (Colin Woodell) is suspended.

The pair must then find a way to work together as details of their complicated romance spill out.

Robyn said: “We always endeavoured to make Danny and Phillips’ relationship a real, authentic look at a workplace romance.

“We wanted to play in the grey area of that situation.

“Pulse shows the edges and pitfalls of their relationship — but also all the joyous moments of working a high-pressure job like this.”

While all this plays out, a hurricane bears down on Miami, creating an onslaught of trauma cases, and the hospital goes into lockdown.

Unlike previous medical series, this show doesn’t aim to portray the doctors as “superheroes”.

“We wanted these characters to be real people who have to go through the relatable issues of working together in a pressure cooker”, said Robyn, “Relationships are forming and breaking apart on Pulse.”
