Even though Shubman Gill’s GT has done fairly well, and are currently in fourth spot in the IPL 2025 points table, but the selection of a couple of players is just very hard to understand. Look, they have compiled a decent squad, but first the retention of Shahrukh Khan didn’t make sense, and now his inclusion in the GT playing XI seems rather useless.
Poor Record for Shahrukh Khan, Rahul Tewatia
Same is the case with batter-spinner Rahul Tewatia, who is now looked at a power-hitting option rather than an all-rounder. He was also retained for 4 Cr. So, let’s discuss the two, one by one. In 99 T20s overall, he has scored 1207 runs only at an average of 19, and a strike-rate of 137. In IPL matches, in 42 outings, he has only 568 runs to his name at an average of 19. And a strike-rate of 142. What really for is he in the team?
This year, he has returned with scores of 9 and 6. Last year. he averaged 18 in 7 matches played, in 2023 for PBKS it was 22, in 2022 it was a lowly 16 and in 2021 it was 21. He doesn’t bowl or even bat in the top order. Why can’t the team look to include someone like a Glenn Phillips for Sherfane Rutherford, and get Mahipal Lomror in place of Shahrukh Khan, one fails to understand.
Shubman Should Look at Washington Sundar, Glenn Phillips
Then, time to look at Tewatia now. There was a time in 2020/21 when had impressed with his all-round abilities. But not anymore. He is just occupying Washington Sundar’s place in the XI. This year he has scored 0, 6, run-out in both the matches, and hasn’t been used for his bowling at all. In fact, he did not bowl in whole of IPL 2024 as well, while with the bat he scored 188 runs. To cut the long story short, he has bagged a wicket in the IPL since 2021 season.
Talking purely of his runs; in 2020/21 he scored 255, then in 2021 it was 155, then 217 in 2022, and 87 and 188, respectively in the last two years. But does that make him a better batter than Washington Sundar? What is the point of hanging on to such brilliant players?
It is a call skipper Shubman Gill has to take at some point, before it becomes too late for them.
