Three Card Brag – 25/1 Threeunderthrufive –66/1Elliott’s hopes high for Three Card trick
Gordon Elliott knows what is required to win the Grand National, the Irishman having won with Silver Birch in 2007, his first runner in the race, and then famously with Tiger Roll in 2018 and 2019.
The Cullentra handler is now eyeing a record-equalling fourth success and he’s made no secret of the fact that THREE CARD BRAG could prove his trump card.
The eight-year-old has long been viewed as a real staying type, finishing fourth in the Albert Bartlett Novices’ Hurdle at Cheltenham in 2023 over three miles.
He was placed behind the likes of Corbetts Cross, Monty’s Star and Spillane’s Tower in his first season over fences and has progressed again this term.
He won a Navan beginners’ contest over 3m on soft ground in January and has since chased home stablemates Better Days Ahead and Stellar Story in a Grade 2 novice at the Co Meath venue, form that looks good in light of that pair placing in the Grade 1 Brown Advisory Novices’ Chase at the Cheltenham Festival since.
A mark of 146 could be within reach for Three Card Brag, with 10st 5lb to carry, and this severe test of stamina might be right up his street.
Nicholls’ charge Under the radar
Paul Nicholls won this great race in 2012 with Neptune Collonges, the popular grey, scoring by a nose under Daryl Jacob to deny Sunnyhillboy in a thriller.
The Ditcheat handler has THREEUNDERTHRUFIVE – one for the golfing aficionados – in the mix this time and he looks overpriced.
Similar to Three Card Brag, he has always been touted as a proper stayer and so this race has long been a possible target.
He was fourth in the Scottish National in 2023 and looks a better horse now. He’s twice been placed behind Victtorino in his two runs this season, both at Ascot over 3m.
Most recently, he was edged out by a nose when seeking to win back-to-back renewals of the Swinley Handicap Chase in February, desperately unfortunate as he led before and after the line but had his head up at the wrong moment for the photo.
Nicholls believes his 10-year-old to be improving and suggests his jumping and proven stamina will be major assets at Aintree.
He has 10st 12lb on his back from a mark of 153 – officially 2lb ‘well in’ on ratings – and looks a serious player at a massive price for the 14-time champion trainer.
