ANDY Reid has revealed why Travis Kelce struggled so mightily in 2024.
Kelce had the worst statistical season of his career last year, but he is returning for another season with Kansas City Chiefs in 2025.
Kelce is one of, if not the greatest tight end of all time, but 2024 showed that age might be catching up to him.
In his age 35 season, Kelce went for just 823 yards and three touchdowns.
He still had 97 catches, but he produced many more quiet games than productive ones.
The Chiefs offense was certainly quieter than usual last year, and Reid has an explanation for it.
“He’s willing. He’s learning when to come out, so he’ll get himself out of the game when he needs it. And I think that’ll just continue with age,” Reid said at the NFL league meetings on Monday.
“I didn’t think that was an issue this year, but I thought we were banged up at the outside positions and that doesn’t help a tight end’s cause at all.
“I just think the healthier we can be around him – he can still be productive.”
The Chiefs offense was almost never healthy during the 2024 season.
Wide receivers Marquise Brown and Rashee Rice never took the field together.
Brown didn’t debut until Week 16 and Rice went down with a season-ending knee injury in Week 4.
Running back Isiah Pacheco also suffered an injury in Week 2 and wasn’t the same player when he returned.
That left much of the burden on Kelce, who wasn’t able to handle it.
Kelce will be 36 years old in this upcoming season, and he will need to have a return to form to prove that he still belongs in the league.
Reid thinks he will though, as Kelce informed him less than a week after the Super Bowl loss that he wasn’t going to retire.
“I just wanted him to put it out there and not me” Reid said on Monday, via The Athletic.

“I always like guys to step back (after the season), but he wants to come back and he’s training like crazy too.”
The Chiefs ownership is also thrilled to see Kelce back on the team for “at least one more year.”
“I’m so excited that he’s going to be back,” owner Clark Hunt said, via The Athletic.
“I think deep down, Brett [Veach], Andy, and I felt like he would be back.
“He loves the game, he loves his teammates, and I know Coach Reid is excited to have his energy back in the building for at least one more year.”
