Not everything came as a huge surprise to WWE fans during a wild night of action in London on Monday.
The world’s biggest wrestling organisation have been on a mammoth European tour across the last few weeks, finishing up in at the O2 for Monday’s Raw before jetting back to the US.
Staging their weekly red brand show and SmackDown on Friday’s, major cities Barcelona, Bologna, and Glasgow have all hosted TV broadcasts and their fair share of raucous action, all under the stewardship of creative boss Triple H.
The London stop off for Raw proved to be no exception, either, with John Cena and Cody Rhodes once again trading shots in a verbal joust to open the show.
Cena attacked his foe’s ‘ego’ and ‘mediocrity’ in another rant, while the WWE Undisputed Champion fired back with attacks on the legend’s wrestling ability and his ‘selling out’ to The Rock at Elimination Chamber.
Iyo Sky and Rhea Ripley battled without a clear winner for Sky’s Women’s World Championship, while Brit duo Tyler Bate and Pete Dunn were reunited with a comeback for New Catch Republic, Bate having been out of action since last year with an injury.
Arguably the most compelling part of Monday’s epic show came in the bloody war between World Heavyweight Champion Gunther, his WrestleMania challenger Jey Uso and Uso’s brother, Jimmy.
Jimmy had wrestled and lost a scheduled match against Gunther in pretty empathic style, Jey absent from ringside at his sibling’s request.
The villainous Gunther picked up his win, but things took a turn for the sinister as the champ turned to leave – he decided to continue his attack instead, beating down Jimmy further before Jey made the save, or so he thought.
Moments later as the two heroes trudged backstage, Gunther floored them both in another sneak attack, brutally beating Jimmy and leaving him in a bloodied mess while a helpless Jey had been tied to one of the ring ropes.
It was a sobering and ferocious latest chapter in a rivalry that was given a much-needed boost but, on closer inspection, it appears a major part of the story fans saw play out had been unintentionally ruined by an on-air mishap.
There was a reasonable amount of time between the final bell of the match between Gunther and Jimmy Uso and the arrival of Jey to break up the-post match attack that allowed the crucial moments thereafter to unfold.
After Gunther beat Jimmy Uso, his music played in the arena but a different star’s video was playedWWE Jey Uso later arrived on the scene to help but, by then, fans already knew he’d be comingWWEIndeed, nothing initially suggested a need for Jey to arrive on the scene at that point in the show, but a likely production error gave the game away, as the popular star’s entrance video momentarily began showing on arena screens before being hurriedly stopped.
As such, fans knew at that stage that something else was coming and, while the eventual scene was nonetheless effective, some of its initial surprise value was unintentionally lost.
Several viewers on Netflix pointed out the clanger on social media, one on X asking: “Did they accidentally show Jey Uso graphics on the tron (screen) when Gunther won?”
Another, noting the live arena crowd response, replied: “Can confirm they did, to be met with chants of: ‘We saw that!’ and ‘You f***** up!’”
A third joked: “Somebody’s getting fired!” while a fourth went on: “Production crew is likely gonna be a man short come Friday.”
Seeing the lighter side, one fan called it ‘hilarious’, while another simply said: “I thought my eyes were playing tricks on me.”
The ending to the segment left Jimmy in a heap and Jey helpless to interveneWWE WWE Chief Content Officer Paul ‘Triple H’ Levesque oversees the current on-screen productWWEThough WWE gave away Jey’s reappearance and the fact something bad was in store for Jimmy after the match, it’s hard to say the segment didn’t deliver overall.
For that, the praise was fairly universal, with one fan perhaps summing it up best by saying: “…now I’m interested in their match. This is how you build hype!”
Jey Uso will attempt to dethrone Gunther at WrestleMania in Vegas, but the two won’t share the main event spotlight supposedly earned by Uso with his Royal Rumble win after that honour was given to another top bout.
