Finn Wolfhard Teases End of Stranger Things, His New Film and More

Finn Wolfhard is celebrating his new horror comedy Hell of a Summer — but he’s also mourning the upcoming final season of his hit Netflix series Stranger Things.

“Bittersweet, bitter and then sweet,” Wolfhard, 22, exclusively told Us Weekly when asked how he felt about the show coming to an end after five seasons.

Since 2016, the actor has portrayed Mike Wheeler in the 1980s-set series, whic follows a group of kids as they try to save the world from supernatural forces and secret government exploits. Throughout his adventures, Mike met and fell in love with the mysterious Eleven (Millie Bobby Brown), and the pair’s sweet romance — which has continued to blossom against all odds — has become a fan-favorite plot point among fans.

From Wolfhard’s point of view, Mike and Eleven’s dynamic — popularly known as “Mileven” — has become such a poignant aspect of Stranger Things because it’s something people see in themselves.

“I think it’s a relationship that has changed a lot over the years where it started almost, like, an E.T. kind of thing, where you find almost this creature that you’re caring for,” he explained. “And then it obviously turns out that it’s a young girl that that character ends up having feelings for and develops into this relationship. I think it really delves into having close relationships with people that are outsiders or feel like outsiders, sort of like you.”

Wolfhard noted that “a lot of people can identify” with feeling as if they don’t belong, which makes Mileven feel more relatable.

“It’s definitely a story line that I really like doing,” he added. “And [something] I think fans will be happy with in the fifth season.”

While those eagerly awaiting the return of the spooky sci-fi adventure will have to wait a bit longer, Wolfhard’s latest film, Hell of a Summer, will surely satisfy their need for a good thrill. The horror comedy follows 24-year-old camp counselor Jason Hochberg (Fred Hechinger), who arrives at summer camp thinking his biggest problem is being out of touch with his teen coworkers. What he doesn’t know is that a masked killer is lurking on the campgrounds, brutally picking counselors off one by one.

Wolfhard co-directed the film with Billy Bryk, and the duo portray BFFs Chris and Bobby, respectively, on screen. Despite having to play double duty on set, Wolfhard was surprised at how “comfortable” doing two jobs actually was.

“Sometimes it actually made it easier because we were able to be in the scene with the rest of the cast and able to give notes super fast and communicate what we wanted a lot faster, just because we were literally in proximity to the actors,” he explained. “And even sometimes we’d stop a scene halfway through, say something and then keep going.”

The added responsibility also made things “tougher” to execute in a timely manner, however, especially when the pair were too involved in the scene to watch the monitor.

Bryk, for his part, said directing while acting was both a “fun experience” and a “unique challenge.” He shared Wolfhard’s sentiments that being unable to watch how a take played out — or give himself notes — ended up being the biggest obstacle to overcome.

“We didn’t have audio playback, so sometimes you’re acting in a scene and you think it’s going well, but you never really know for sure, or at least I never really know for sure,” he said. “So sometimes you see the dailies, like, a day or two later, and you’re like, ‘Oh, interesting, interesting. I said the lines like that, I should have made that adjustment.’ But for the most part, we had such a great crew around us and such a great cast that it actually felt quite natural doing both at the same time.”

Wolfhard and Bryk met on the set of 2021’s Ghostbusters: Afterlife and created Hell of a Summer in hopes of making a film about “being young” — and occasionally, “dumbasses.” Horror comedies becoming a trend in recent years was just a great coincidence.

For Bryk, the renewed love of the genre is credited to something simple: people just wanting “to have fun.”

“I think that as long as the horror makes the comedy funnier and the comedy gives the horror more stakes, it’s a really winning combo,” Bryk shared. “And I think if you ever are trying to just jump between the two, you can get it very wrong. But for us, it was very important that it felt like they were going hand in hand and it wasn’t like they were competing against each other. And instead, it was kind of like they were this odd couple of genres that were really sort of complimenting each other.”

As for setting the story at sleepaway camp, Wet Hot American Summer served as a big inspiration for the project — and both Wolfhard and Bryk confessed they always yearned for that “full-blown” summer camp experience.

“It just sounded like a really fun opportunity,” Wolfhard told Us. “My mom is a camp person. She went for her entire childhood and was a counselor, and she just loved it so much and really wanted me to go as a kid, and I was too scared to leave home. I would never want to.”

Despite not getting to have the proper camp experience as a kid, Wolfhard was able to create his own version by growing up on sets like the one on Stranger Things.

“What’s cool about acting and being on sets is that they are kind of little summer camps,” he explained. “Obviously, with pretty different stakes, and you’re doing pretty different activities, but it’s one of those things where you kind of get that through bonding with a crew or an ensemble. And so while I didn’t have a full-blown summer camp [stay], it was something that I always wanted to have and felt like I’ve experienced in other ways.”

Hell of a Summer hits theaters Friday, April 4.
