Egypt sees rare pro-Palestine protests on Eid al-Fitr

Tens of thousands of Egyptians took part in a rare pro-Palestine demonstration on Monday as Cairo remains under pressure from US President Donald Trump’s Gaza displacement plan.

The protest commenced from outside Cairo’s Al-Siddiq Mosque, where marchers chanted slogans in support of Palestine and Gaza – where hundreds have been killed since Israel resumed its attacks two weeks ago – and waved Palestinian and Egyptian flags.

They also chanted in support of Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi and his plan to rebuild in Gaza.

Egypt has tried to lobby for a counterplan to Trump’s proposal which suggests displacing the Gaza Strip’s inhabitants and occupying the territory.

Trump’s shock proposal would see Palestinians expelled to neighbouring Egypt or Jordan, and possibly other countries.

An Arab-backed plan presented by Egypt proposes rebuilding war-torn Gaza in phases and keeping its inhabitants there, but Washington and Tel Aviv have refused this.

In one Cairo neighbourhood, hundreds gathered after Eid al-Fitr prayers – marking the end of the fasting month of Ramadan – chanting: "With our souls and blood we will redeem you, Palestine," while beating drums and waving Palestinian flags.

Demonstrations were also held in the city of Tanta and the Sohag governorate.

The demonstrations are believed to have been called for by parties close to the Egyptian government as protests in the country are rare and often have brutal crackdown by authorities.

Some people who protested Israel’s war on Gaza when it erupted in October 2023 were arrested.

Cairo has said moving some of Gaza’s population to the Sinai Peninsula would end the Palestinian cause, while to Jordan – where population is largely made up of Palestinian natives – the issue is seen as an existential threat to the kingdom.

The war in Gaza has killed over 50,000 people in total, mostly civilians, and has left much of the enclave in ruins.

A short-lived ceasefire mediated between Egypt, Qatar and the US between Israel and Hamas saw dozens of Israeli captives released in exchange for thousands of Palestinian prisoners and detainees in Israel.
