An elderly woman was found dead at the site of a Mira Mesa house fire early Monday morning.
Crews arrived just after 2:30 a.m. to a residential fire at a single-story home at 10825 Westonhill Dr. near the intersection of Mira Mesa Blvd. in the Mira Mesa area.
“Two residents exited on their own before the first engine company arrived,” said the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department in a release. “During the second search, a woman was found deceased in the back of the home.”
There were 30 personnel assigned to the fire, including four engines, one truck, and one medic, according to the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department.
“Throughout the course of the firefighting efforts we were informed that there may be somebody trapped inside the residence,” San Diego Fire-Rescue Battalion Chief Erik Windsor told Onscene.Media. “Crews conducted a search for the trapped victim while they were extinguishing the fire.”
As firefighters checked and re-checked for flames and smoke, they found the woman in the house.
Around 30 personnel were assigned to the fire, including four engines, one truck, and one medic. They put the fire out within 30 minutes, aided by light rains.
“The residents reported being alerted to the fire because they smelled smoke,” the department added. “However, there is no indication that any functioning smoke detectors were inside this residence.”
An estimated $700,000 worth of damage was done to the house. The Metro Arson Strike Team is investigating.
