Paul Finebaum: SEC basketball left critics with broken jaws, toothless mouths

Paul Finebaum heard all the critics and naysayers of SEC basketball this season. However, he’s having a tough time hearing those critics lately.

After setting the record for most teams in a single NCAA Tournament with 14, many from outside the SEC were critical of the league and waited for its demise in March Madness. However, that demise never came.

The SEC would set a new record for teams in a single Sweet 16 (with 7) while tying the record for teams in a single Elite Eight with 4. In the process, the SEC became the only team to be represented in all 4 regional finals in the same NCAA Tournament and set a new record for wins in an NCAA Tournament.

So, why hasn’t Paul Finebaum heard from those critics of the SEC? Well, he dropped an interesting description on “McElroy and Cubelic in the Morning” as to why those critics are silent.

“The SEC has completely silenced the critics. They have not only silenced them, they have broken their jaw and emptied their mouth of teeth,” described Finebaum. “What you said is so right because it was that close (to having 6 of the Elite Eight teams hail from the SEC).

“It is such a remarkable achievement that 2 SEC schools have made it to the Final Four, but it almost seems like a letdown after what we have seen this basketball season and really during the last couple days of the tournament. Because there was a moment Saturday when I was thinking ‘You know what, they might all get there (to the Final Four)’.”

Now, the only way for things to get better for the SEC would be a national title in San Antonio. However, it’s not going to be easy with Duke leading the latest national titles odds at +105 via ESPN Bet.

As for the rest of the Final Four odds and the national title, Florida is listed at +275 with Auburn checking in at +500. The good news is that at least one team will play in next Monday’s title game after Florida and Auburn meet Saturday night.

We’ll soon find out if the greatest college basketball season by a single conference results in a title for the SEC.
