America’s Got Talent is celebrating its milestone 20th season when it returns to NBC on Tuesday, May 27 for its summer run of fun. And it is mixing up the judges’ panel for the occasion.
Returning to reclaim her seat at the table is Spice Girls’ Mel B, who previously appeared on the series from Seasons 8 to 13. She will join current panel Simon Cowell, Howie Mandel and Emmy-nominated actress Sofia Vergara.
In announcing the 20th season, Simon said, “Over the years, we have seen some amazing acts and met some truly incredible people. It’s true that two or three minutes can change your life. I want to thank every contestant, all the fans who have supported the show every year, and to NBC for believing in this show. And of course, the amazing team, past and present, who make the show so special. Now as always, I am really excited to meet the contestants this year.”

Parade was on the red carpet for the upcoming season and spoke to the other judges and host Terry Crews about their favorite moments from over the years – and the interesting thing is how many of them chose their Golden Buzzers.
“V.Unbeatable was always one of my favorites,” says Howie, who is in his sixteenth season as a judge on AGT. “They’re a large troop of acrobats from India. I have a new favorite this year that I’m not going to give away. But it’s my Golden Buzzer, which surprised me to no end because I don’t usually respond to this category. It’s just when you think you can’t see anything better, bigger or more exciting, you see something better, bigger, and more exciting.”

Terry answered, “Oh, my God! Well, you know, my Golden Buzzer Avery Dixon, saxophonist, amazing. I gotta go back to Nightbirde, go back to Kodi Lee, amazing people. We’ve seen some lives change here. Look at Richard Goodall, you know what I mean? Just off last year, unbelievable.”

For Sofia, it was the dance troupe The Mayyas. She said, “In [my third season], I picked a Golden Buzzer, the Mayyas. And then they won AGT, that was very special for me.”

And for Mel B, it was Darci Lynne: “My Golden Buzzer last time I was on, Darci Lynne, the ventriloquist, she was amazing. But there’s so much talent on the seasons that I wasn’t on, the seasons I was on, and the season I’m on right now. It’s like the gift that keeps on giving. Just when you think, surely there’s no more talent left in the whole world, there’s more that comes.”

All of the judges were happy for the return of the talent competition. But Howie summed it up best for everyone when asked his favorite moment from the show.

“I love every moment that I’m here,” he said. “I just feel like this is a bright spot in entertainment, you know? It really is, this is sunshine. A lot of shows I’ve worked on, they’re great shows and they’re fun. But there isn’t a moment. Whether I’m sitting there anticipating what’s going to happen next, whether I’m watching somebody’s dream come true, whether I’m watching their life change forever, or just sitting back and being entertained or laughing or screaming or feeling emotional for somebody, there’s nothing that moves you in every direction. And that’s why I believe this is still the number one summer show whether you’re five or 95. I watch it with my grandchildren.”
America’s Got Talent will return on Tuesday, May 27 at 8 p.m. ET/PT on NBC. Stream next day on Peacock.
