Making a beautiful addition to her album “eternal sunshine,” Ariana Grande released a deluxe version titled “eternal sunshine deluxe: brighter days ahead” with six new songs on Friday.
Along with new tracks, Grande released a short film that she co-created with Christian Breslaur, a director who collaborated with her on music videos for the original album including “the boy is mine,” “we can’t be friends” and “yes, and?”
The short film and the entire deluxe cleverly reference Grande’s “we can’t be friends” music video where her character signs a contract with Brighter Days Inc. to erase memories of her ex.
Featuring Grande’s character, Peaches, the film takes place in a technologically advanced world with memory preservation and erasure services from Brighter Days Inc. It is a heartfelt film depicting Grande’s memories alongside performances creatively promoting the album.
The first song on the deluxe, “intro (end of the world) – extended,” is not entirely new but features over a minute of new material, with a new verse and outro.
Grande adds details of a relationship she felt unloved in, urging her partner to see the situation through her eyes before she moves on and erases him, heard in lyrics like, “I broke your heart because you broke mine / So me, I am the bad guy / ‘Cause I already grieved you / And you started to realize / I do need ya, I did / I wish I could un-need ya, so I did.”
In “twilight zone,” Grande explores feeling stuck in a limbo state following the relationship, not holding any regrets but in disbelief that it ever occurred. The song plays with synthesizers, giving it a slight electropop feeling and bittersweet undertones with Grande’s lyrics.
The song is a reflection but also a step towards acceptance, with lyrics such as, “‘Cause I’m right here where I’m meant to be / Not that I’d call you, I won’t / Sometimes, I just can’t believe / You happened.”
The fourth deluxe track, “dandelion,” is the most fun and creative addition, with saxophone and trombone by producer and instrumentalist Jesse McGinty. Still, the song maintains the album’s pop sounds with keyboards, drums and bass from Max Martin and ILYA, giving the track an innovative blend of sounds as Grande expresses romantic desire to a new love interest.
A vulnerable close to the album, “Hampstead,” navigates Grande’s experience with the end of a relationship while living in Hampstead, London, during the filming of her latest films, “Wicked” and “Wicked: For Good.”
She also touches on the criticism and rumors about her personal life that circulated in the media during this time in lyrics like, “You think you’ve read the book I’m still writing / I can’t imagine so badly want to be right / Guess I’m forever on your mind / I wonder why.”
Grande gives fans a seamless expansion of “eternal sunshine” with creative new tracks as she continues to evolve as an artist. Her storytelling continuously improves with new sonic elements, visuals and more.
