A disappointing inaugural season in the Big 12 (13-19) left Arizona State men’s basketball coach Bobby Hurley with a lot of work to do on the roster front.
Among the biggest departures are senior point guard Alston Mason, aging out after he was perhaps the Sun Devils’ most reliable player over the course of the season, and freshman shooting guard Joson Sanon, a highly touted recruit who decided to transfer to St. John’s after one year with Hurley.
Mason ended the season on a tear, averaging 18.3 points, 4.8 assists and one steal per game over the last 10 contests.

Sanon flashed his NBA potential early with 15.9 points (54.3% from 3) per game over the first nine before a high ankle sprain forced him to miss five of the first seven conference games. He found his rhythm late, averaging 18.8 points over the final five games after averaging 6.5 points over the previous 13.
The Sun Devils will also have a large void of production to fill in BJ Freeman, who was dismissed from the program as its leading scorer (13.7 points per game) with five games left in the regular season.
Hurley moved quickly to add experience, with mid-major veterans Moe Odum (Pepperdine) and Marcus Adams Jr. (Cal State Northridge) committing prior to the Sun Devils finishing their season in the College Basketball Crown tournament in Las Vegas.
Much of what still awaits ASU in the portal hinges on the decisions of the remaining three freshmen: Jayden Quaintance (2.62 blocks per game, second among power conference players) along with impact contributors Amier Ali and Trevor Best.
