That’s why I was so excited to discover Victoria Bowser’s inexpensive hack for making natural peanut butter at home. It’s fast and simple to pull off, and leaves room for you to customize the flavor. Even better, it costs a fraction of what you’d pay for natural peanut butter at the store.

If you’re sick of shelling out nearly $10 for a jar of natural peanut butter or just want something a little fresher, this recipe is worth trying. Also, it’s nice to know exactly what’s going into your jar of peanut butter, and to be able to tweak it to your taste buds. Plus, making your own peanut butter means you’re getting the freshest spread possible with no preservatives added. Who doesn’t want that?
“I wish I would have started years ago,” Bowser writes in the caption of her Instagram video. Bowser also says in the comments that she doesn’t refrigerate her spread, so you don’t have to stress about it hogging precious space in your fridge. “We eat it in about 2 weeks, so I can’t vouch for longer than that,” she adds. (If you refrigerate it, you have to let it get to room temperature again to get that classic spreadable consistency.)

How to Make Your Own Peanut Butter
Bowser’s recipe is simple. She uses a container of unsalted peanuts from Aldi and dumps them into a blender. (She doesn’t specify the size, but it looks like a 16-ounce jar.) Bowser uses a Vitamix, which is known for its power, but any solid food processor or blender should work.
From there, set the blender on low. Stop the blender and mix it a few times as needed. Keep blending until the mixture is creamy. Add about 1 teaspoon of salt for flavor and 1 teaspoon of honey for a hint of sweetness, if you'd like. Blend the mixture until you reach your desired texture, then transfer the mixture into jars.

Top Tips For Making Your Own Peanut Butter
There are a few things to keep in mind when it comes to making your own peanut butter.
• Pick your peanuts. Because this is such a simple recipe, the peanuts you choose make a huge difference. You can use raw peanuts, if you like the flavor, buy raw peanuts at toast them at home or pick up dry-roasted peanuts (unsalted or salted) that are roasted for you.
• Don't walk away. Stay close to your blender or food processor when you make the peanut butter, and switch it off if it seems like the machine is struggling. Depending on how powerful your machine is, the peanuts might present a bit of a blending challenge.
• Flavor it up. One of the best things about DIY peanut butter is that you can add (or not add) your favorite flavors. Drizzle in some honey for sweetness, blend in cocoa powder for a chocolatey spin or add a sprinkle of cinnamon for a hit of spice.
• Go nuts. Once you get the hang of peanuts (or if you can't eat peanuts), you can branch out to other nuts using the same method. DIY almond, walnut and/or pistachio butter coming right up!
