This may sound shocking, but brothers Joey Lawrence, Matthew Lawrence and Andrew "Andy" Lawrence are not actually the Lawrence brothers.
During a panel appearance at 90s Con in Hartford, Conn., on Friday, March 28, the Brotherly Love heartthrobs explained the full story behind their stage name.
“It was my middle name,” said Joey, 48, whose actual last name is Mignogna. “I was named after our dad and our grandfather on my dad’s side. And then, in the early 80s, no one could pronounce Mignogna. That’s not a name people will say. Today, things like that are celebrated. But in the 80s, it was like, ‘We need to water this down.’ The silent Gs. … They were like, ‘We need to go with something a little more bland.’ So they’re like, ‘Let’s call him Joey Lawrence,’ and then that’s just what we did. It just made sense.”

Added Matthew, “There was [also] an insulation factor. Before the internet, you could hide a little bit behind that. It would be very, very hard to find us.”
In the 90s, Joey, Matthew and Andy starred on Brotherly Love, a sitcom that ran for two seasons from 1995 to 1997. But they were also known for other popular projects. Joey was seen on Blossom and Melissa & Joey, while Matthew is known for his roles in Mrs. Doubtfire and Boy Meets World. Andy has been seen on Recess, among other projects.
“Now,” said Matthew, “I’m just stuck with two different names, and I can’t travel internationally without a huge hassle. It’s true!”
When asked if they would have preferred to keep their actual last name, Matthew said, “I do,” adding, “It’s really a pain in the butt, honestly. You have to prove constantly that you’re both people. Even for a while there, the government only recognized me as Matt Lawrence because I paid taxes from the time I was a toddler to 18 as Matt Lawrence, but really my name is Matthew William Mignogna.”
Setting the record straight on their actual last name’s pronunciation, they revealed Mignogna sounds just like, “Filet mignon.”

At the convention, the trio also revealed that they’ll hopefully be making a major television comeback in the near future.
The brothers have been busy developing a single-camera, half-hour comedy titled Lawrence House with the producer of Wedding Crashers.
As for when the project will come to fruition, Joey explained at 90s Con, "It’s a massively large machine that is behind it, and they move at snail’s speed. But, we recently finished all of the episodes that we needed to film, so now it’s in the editing process.”
He addd, “We’re excited about it, and I think this next year we’ll be able to share it with everybody.”
90s Con is taking place March 28-30 at the Connecticut Convention Center.
