High school sports weekly wrap-up: Local athletes earn winter all-state honors

The high school spring sports season may be well underway.

But, this past week brought a whole new slew of honors for local athletes that just got done making an impact during the winter sports season.

    On Tuesday, CHSAANow.com and MaxPreps released their picks for all-state boys basketball teams.

    A day earlier, they announced all-state girls basketball teams.

    Among the local honorees, Windsor junior swingman Madden Smiley was named the Class 5A boys basketball player of the year, while his coach, Jon Rakiecki, was named 5A’s coach of the year.

    The Wizards are fresh off a 22-6 season in which they defeated Green Mountain in the state finals, 60-49 on March 15 in the Denver Coliseum, to secure the program’s first state title since 1924.

    Smiley, who also earned all-state first-team honors, led Windsor in points (20.9 ppg), field goal percentage (53%), rebounds (7.6 rpg), assists (3.4 apg) and steals (2.1 spg).

    His senior shooting guard teammate, John Backhaus, was named to the 5A boys second team. Severance freshman Christian Powell was a 5A boys honorable mention.

    Eaton junior center/power forward Austin Crider earned a 4A boys honorable mention, as did Fort Lupton senior combo guard Isaiah Garcia, Bluedevils junior point guard Javon Gonzales, University junior Coehn Nitzel and Bulldogs senior Gage Schminke.

    Resurrection Christian’s talented senior point guard Ty Yoder was named the 3A boys player of the year after leading the Cougars to their second consecutive state title with a 55-42 win over Strasburg on March 15 at the University of Denver. Yoder averaged team-highs of 16.2 points, 5.7 assists and 1.9 steals per game for unbeaten Resurrection Christian (28-0).

    Yoder is joined in the five-player 3A boys first team by Windsor Charter senior point guard Kellen Ball and Highland senior guard/forward Sawyer Morgan. Resurrection Christian senior forward Graham Riggs earned 3A boys second-team honors.

    Cougars senior guard Cade Crutcher was a 3A boys honorable mention, as were Platte Valley junior Regan Edstrom, Resurrection Christian junior guard Egan Koenig, Windsor Charter sophomore shooting guard Dayton Long and Firebirds junior shooting guard Andrew Schams.

    Dayspring Christian senior swingman Owen McClanahan and Union Colony senior Josiah Rodriguez earned 2A boys honorable mentions.

    Prairie sophomore Hunter Johnson was a 1A boys honorable mention.

    More all-state hoops honors

    There was also no shortage of local athletes that earned all-state girls basketball honors.

    University senior power forward/center Addison Harding was named the 4A player of the year, while her coach, Matt Baumgartner, was named coach of the year. The Bulldogs capped a flawless 28-0 season with a 42-35 win in the title game against Delta on March 15 in the Denver Coliseum. It was University’s first girls basketball title in school history.

    Harding led the Bulldogs in scoring (11 ppg), field goal percentage (59%), rebounds (7 rpg) and blocks (1.7 bpg).

    Fellow University senior Janay Kravig, a guard/forward, was also a 4A first team selection. Eaton sophomore Courtney Steinkamp was a 4A second team pick.

    Valley senior center Nevaeh Jimenez was selected as a 4A honorable mention, as were University senior guard Allizzey Madrigal, Bulldogs junior forward Maddie McNair, Weld Central senior forward Riley Phelps, Eaton sophomore Delaney Reuter and University junior guard Natalie Trujillo.

    Roosevelt junior power forward Kyla Hollier was named to the 5A first team. Her senior Rough Riders teammate, point guard Ryanne Bahnsen-Price, was named to the 5A second team, as was Windsor senior shooting guard Reyleigh Hess.

    Northridge sophomore Sophia Carbajal, Greeley Central senior point guard Madison Sepeda and Windsor sophomore swingman Gracie Worlsey were all named 5A honorable mentions.

    Resurrection Christian senior point guard Olivia Klein was selected as the 3A player of the year, while Cougars coach Jason Conrad was named the coach of the year.

    Resurrection Christian went 26-2 this season and defeated Denver Christian in the title game March 15 at the University of Denver. It was the Cougars’ first girls basketball state title in school history.

    Klein led the team in scoring (18.2 ppg), assists (3 apg) and steals (3.5 spg).

    Highland senior combo guard Briza Flores also was named to the 3A first team. Resurrection Christian senior guard/forward Callie Gillespie was named to the 3A second team.

    Cougars senior power forward/center Lysette Baatz was a 3A honorable mention, as were Resurrection Christian senior point guard Caz McGraw and Platte Valley senior point guard Lauryn Uyemura.

    Dayspring sophomore point guard Brynnli Bryson was a 2A honorable mention, as were Union Colony junior Soliana Gebremeskel and Dayspring sophomore point guard Peyten Reese.

    Briggsdale senior Kayl Klem was a 1A first team pick. Her junior teammate Claire Brown was a 1A honorable mention. Ditto for Prairie sophomore Hannah Kugler.

    Top grapplers

    CHSAA also released all-state boys and girls wrestling selections earlier this month.

    Those selections are based on results from the state tournaments in February at Ball Arena with state champions earning first-team honors and state runners-up being named to second teams.

    Highland’s Ira Sittner earned 2A boys 190-pound first-team honors. His Huskies teammate, Tyler Varra, was a 2A boys second-team selection at 138 pounds, and their teammate Wyatt Chase was a 2A boys second-team pick at 175.

    Highland’s Korbin Hokes (120) and Dayspring Christian’s Logan Clark (150) were 2A honorable mentions.

    Eaton 113-pounder Blake Hawkins was named to the 3A first team, as were his Reds teammate Cal Sidwell (190) and Resurrection Christian’s Isaiah Johnson (215) and Samuel Stockton (285).

    Eaton’s Paxton Pettinger (157), Fort Lupton’s Christopher Galicia (165) and University’s Connor Simonds (285) were named to the 3A second team.

    Fort Lupton’s Logan Sweetman (120), Platte Valley’s Logan Vannest (132), Eaton’s Dylan Paris (132), Fort Lupton’s Josiah Gonzales (138), Valley’s Garrett McGirl (150), Valley’s Nehemiah Whaley (157) and Valley’s Rocky Hoffschneider (165) were all 3A honorable mentions.

    Severance’s standout 113-pounder Drake Vombaur was a 4A first-team honoree, as were Roosevelt 144-pounder Chris LaLonde, Windsor 150-pounder Adrian Czyszczon, Wizards 165-pounder Robert Kendall and Windsor 215-pounder Evan Perez.

    Greeley Central 106-pounder Daniel Romero and Roosevelt 138-pounder Malakii Martin made the 4A second team.

    Roosevelt’s Kash Long (120) was a 4A honorable mention, as were Rough Riders 126-pounder Ethan Mora, Roosevelt 132-pounder Travis Long, Greeley Central 150-pounder Noah Garcia-Salazar and Windsor 175-pounder Santi Fernandez.

    Greeley West 126-pounder Julian Chavez was a 5A honorable mention.

    As for the girls, Severance 130-pounder Elia Schultz was a 4A first-team honoree, while her 135-pound teammate Faith Vondy, Fort Lupton’s 130-pounder Alyssa Solis-Ornelas and University 190-pounder McKinlee Collett were second-team picks.
