Ukiah Unified School Desk: Busy spring days

By Deb Kubin, Superintendent

As we enter the final stretch of the school year, there’s a special rhythm that comes with spring in our schools. March often feels like the longest month – full of focused classroom learning, activities, and preparation – but before we know it, April and May will move at lightning speed. I wanted to take a moment to update our families on the exciting things happening across the district and express my gratitude for your continued partnership.

One highlight from this month was our recent Student Exhibition Night at Ukiah High School. What an incredible evening! Our students had the opportunity to showcase their skills, talents, and hard work through exhibitions and presentations, sharing their projects with parents, staff, and community members. It’s always inspiring to see the confidence and creativity of our students, and we’re proud of the well-rounded education they’re receiving.

Speaking of student success, I’m thrilled to share that many of our high school seniors are celebrating college acceptance letters from the schools of their choice. Whether they are heading to universities, community colleges, or straight into the workforce – their efforts are paying off. Our Career and Technical Education pathways students are equally busy planning their next steps, securing internships, certifications, and job opportunities. We couldn’t be prouder of them.

In addition, congratulations are in order for one of our outstanding middle school math educators who was recently named Educator of the Year, Kristen Tangren! This well-deserved recognition reflects the passion and commitment our teachers bring to their classrooms every day.

For families with younger children, I’m pleased to report that construction on our three remaining Transitional Kindergarten classrooms is ahead of schedule. These state-of-the-art learning spaces will be ready for the upcoming school year, providing even more young learners with a strong start.

As we prepare for April, many of our students in grades 3 – 8 and 11 will be participating in the state’s CAASPP (California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress) testing. While these tests are just one measure of progress, they give us valuable information about how students are learning. Families can help by ensuring students get a good night’s sleep, eat a healthy breakfast, and come to school on time during testing days. Encouragement and a positive attitude go a long way!

I also want to thank everyone who has supported our ongoing Attendance Drive. Regular attendance makes a significant difference in student achievement, and your efforts to get your children to school each day do not go unnoticed.

Finally, Spring Break is right around the corner – March 31 through April 4 – a well-deserved opportunity for students and staff to recharge and return ready to finish the year strong.

Thank you for your continued support of our schools. Together, we are building bright futures for all of our students.
