California Lottery players will soon experience an upgraded version of Mega Millions, bringing bigger jackpots and more frequent wins.
Mega Millions has already made history with seven jackpot wins exceeding $1 billion, all in different states. The final drawing under the current format takes place on Friday, April 4, before the revamped game launches.
The new Mega Millions offers enhanced prizes with an automatic multiplier at every non-jackpot tier, improved odds of winning, larger starting jackpots, and faster-growing prizes. The first drawing under the new structure will be held on Tuesday, April 8, at 8 p.m.
“This is not only thrilling news for our players, but also for California’s public schools,” said Carolyn Becker, California Lottery spokesperson. “Every ticket sold in our state will contribute an additional two dollars to schools. We’re confident these enhancements will boost our ability to generate even more funding for education, which is at the core of our mission.”
Key Player Benefits in the New Mega Millions:
Better odds overall – The chances of winning any prize will improve to 1 in 23 (previously 1 in 24), thanks to the removal of one gold Mega Ball. Larger starting jackpots – The jackpot will now reset to $50 million after a win, instead of the previous $20 million starting point. Faster-growing and more frequent big jackpots – Jackpots will increase at a quicker pace, with the estimated average win jumping from $450 million to over $800 million. Built-in prize multiplier (2X-10X) – Every non-jackpot win will automatically multiply by 2X, 3X, 4X, 5X, or 10X, with non-jackpot prizes ranging from $10 to $10 million. Higher minimum payouts – Every winning ticket will now pay at least double the $5 cost per play, with a minimum prize of $10. Previously, the lowest prize matched the $2 ticket price. More funds for education – The new enhancements are expected to generate additional revenue for California public schools, from kindergarten through college. To support these improvements, ticket prices for the new Mega Millions will increase to $5 per play—only the second price adjustment since the game launched over 20 years ago and the first since 2017.
If no one wins the jackpot in the April 4 drawing, the prize will roll over into the new game format. Any tickets purchased before the change will still be honored under the original prize structure.
Since the last Mega Millions update in 2017, the game has created over 1,200 millionaires, averaging three per week.
Mega Millions is available in 45 states, Washington, D.C., and the U.S. Virgin Islands, with drawings held Tuesdays and Fridays at 8 p.m. Pacific Time in Atlanta. Lottery proceeds support various good causes, allocated differently in each jurisdiction.
