D-backs pitcher Jordan Montgomery needs Tommy John surgery

Arizona Diamondbacks left-handed pitcher Jordan Montgomery’s 2025 is over after he disclosed on Tuesday that he will require Tommy John surgery for the second time in his career.

The procedure will happen next week, as Montgomery learned of his diagnosis on Monday.

“Just haven’t been recovering very well,” Montgomery said. “Day after that last game, came back sore, took a day off like I normally do. Next day, it was still a little achy, so we pushed my bullpen back. Threw a pretty good bullpen, but something was wrong, and they told me we were just going to get some imaging on it.

“We thought it was just like a joint thing, would get a shot in there, clean it up and I’d be good. And it just wasn’t the case.”

Montgomery’s injury clears up Arizona’s pitching conundrum to an extent. The D-backs entered the offseason with an excess of starters and added ace Corbin Burnes to a rotation of Zac Gallen, Merrill Kelly, Eduardo Rodriguez, Brandon Pfaadt and Ryne Nelson. Montgomery and Nelson were placed in the bullpen to start the year after Pfaadt won the last starting role.

Montgomery signed a one-year, $25 million contract with a player option just after Opening Day in 2024. He was one of several clients of agent Scott Boras who waited out the offseason and signed a short-term deal, and his delayed signing pushed his Arizona debut three weeks into the season.

The Diamondbacks did not get what they had anticipated out of Montgomery, who threw 117 innings with a 6.23 ERA and -1.4 bWAR (seventh-lowest in MLB). He ended up moving into a bullpen role before the end of the season.

Montgomery’s player option vested to $22.5 million, which he accepted, the most expensive contract for the 2025 season on the payroll entering the offseason.

After the year, managing partner Ken Kendrick was clear in his disappointment, calling the decision to sign Montgomery “horrible” and taking accountability for pushing for it. General manager Mike Hazen spoke with Montgomery after the season to address the situation, and he told Arizona Sports’ Wolf & Luke there was a scenario in which a much-improved Montgomery suited back up in Sedona red in 2025.

At the same time, ESPN’s Jeff Passan reported the D-backs were looking to eat some salary to move off Montgomery, and several trade rumors followed the left-hander. By the winter meetings, reports indicated a move was very likely. One notable failed trade attempt was for Cody Bellinger, whom the Chicago Cubs traded to the New York Yankees.

How did Jordan Montgomery’s spring in limbo go?

Montgomery showed up to spring training having lost 20-25 pounds, looking to find smoother movements and be more athletic on the mound.

A strained left index finger halted his build-up early on, as he did not pitch in a Cactus League game until March 8. And it went poorly, as Montgomery recorded one out and allowed five earned runs, throwing only 11 of 28 pitches for strikes.

He made his next appearance on the backfields, which he found a lot more success with, and he followed that with 2.2 scoreless innings in his first game at Salt River Fields. He was probable to pitch the final tune-up game on Tuesday.

“I mean, literally show up day one and get hurt. That was a kick in the stomach. But this is even worse. So just got to roll with the punches,” Montgomery said.

“I was probably just trying to throw too hard too soon. I was throwing bullpens really hard and then get in a game and tense up trying to make the perfect pitch. And that’s never good for your arm. But I was doing some pretty good stuff. It was there.”
