High school sports results (Friday-Saturday): University baseball team shines in Delta’s home tournament

Baseball

Valley 15, Northridge 5, 5 inn., in Fort Morgan: Valley stayed a few steps ahead of Northridge in both teams’ first game of Fort Morgan’s home tournament. The Vikings out-hit the Grizzlies 14-6. Junior Seth Kissler hit 2 for 4 with two RBI, two runs and two doubles. He was one of five Valley players with multiple RBI. Senior Joel Vasquez led Northridge, hitting 1 for 2 with three RBI. The Vikings improved to 1-1 on the season. The Grizzlies fell to 0-3.

University goes 2-0, in Delta: University prevailed in a pitchers’ duel to open its run in Delta’s home tournament, defeating Falcon 2-0 before knocking off host Delta 7-1. The Bulldogs out-hit Falcon 5-1 in the first game.  Junior Joel Ramirez pitched all seven innings, striking out seven and walking none. He faced just one batter more than the minimum. In Game 2, Ramirez and senior Preston Natividad each had one hit and drove in two runs. Junior Gage Viken pitched five of six innings, allowing one earned run on six hits, striking out six and walking two. University improved to 2-2 overall.

    Resurrection Christian 6, Chandler (Ariz.) 4, in Phoenix, Ariz.: Resurrection Christian picked up a hard-fought win during the second day of the Coach Bob Invitational. Trailing 3-0, the Cougars scored six of the final seven runs, including four runs in the bottom of the fifth. Seniors Vaughn Green and Charley Wilson had two RBI apiece. Wilson went 3 for 4 with a double. Resurrection Christian improved to 2-2 overall.

    Briggsdale 25, Weldon Valley 0, 3 inn., in Briggsdale: Briggsdale got off to an explosive start to its season. The Falcons out-hit Weldon Valley 9-1. Sophomore Jeremiah Sparks led the way, hitting 3 for 4 with six RBI and four runs. Junior Scot Francis pitched for Briggsdale, allowing no runs on one hit, striking out six and walking five.

    Greeley Central goes 1-1, in Fort Morgan: Greeley Central couldn’t slow Fort Morgan’s offense in the Mustangs’ home tournament, falling 12-5. The Wildcats came back with a clutch 11-10 win against The Academy. Greeley Central improved to 1-4 on the season. Against The Academy, Greeley Central trailed 9-8 before scoring three runs in the top of the seventh. Freshman Angel Lopez-Meza and senior Anthony Partida each had three hits and two RBI. Lopez-Meza had a double, and Partida connected on a triple.

    Dayspring Christian opens season, in Fowler: Dayspring Christian split the first two games of the season, in Fowler’s home tournament. The Eagles defeated Limon 10-0 in six innings but lost to host Fowler 7-5. Sophomore Gavin Bohl hit 3 for 4 with two RBI and two runs against Limon. Senior Gage Davis pitched all six innings, allowing no runs on one hit, striking out 11 and walking two. Dayspring senior Logan Vaniddekinge had five RBI and a home run on 1-for-4 hitting against Fowler.

    Prospect Ridge Academy 5, Weld Central 4, in Broomfield: Weld Central dropped this tight nonleague game to fall to 3-3 on the season. Prospect Ridge trailed 4-3 before scoring a pair of winning runs in the bottom of the seventh. The Miners out-hit the Rebels 6-2. Sophomore Ezekiel Zavala and senior Marcello Rossi had Weld Central’s only two hits.

    Girls tennis

    Eaton places second, in Eaton: Eaton played host to four other teams during the Eaton Invitational. The host Reds scored 27 points and placed second behind Lutheran (52).

    Boys volleyball

    Stargate School 3, Windsor Charter 0, in Windsor: Windsor Charter wasn’t able to pick up a set in this nonleague match, falling 25-14, 25-13, 25-21. Senior Aedan James led the Firebirds with six kills and a block. Windsor Charter fell to 2-4 overall.

    Baseball

    Eaton wins two, in Pueblo: Eaton picked up a pair of wins in a tournament in Pueblo, defeating longtime foe Brush 13-2 in six innings and beating Alamosa 24-0 in five innings. Junior Liam Whalen led the way against Brush, hitting 2 for 3 with four RBI, two runs and two doubles. Whalen and fellow junior Gunnar Garrision combined to allow one earned run on four hits, striking out seven and walking one. The Reds out-hit Alamosa 20-1. Freshman Jackson Denooy hit 4 for 4 with four RBI, four runs, a double and one home run. Junior pitchers Vinnie Juarez and Austin Edelmon combined to allow two earned runs on one hit, striking out six and walking one. Eaton improved to 4-0.

    Windsor 14, Pueblo East 2, 5 inn., in Windsor: Windsor dominated this nonconference affair to improve to 4-1 on the young season. Senior Thomas Tripp had a big day at the plate for the Wizards, hitting 3 for 4 with two triples and five RBI. Junior Wyatt Gustafson was effective on the mound, allowing two earned runs on four hits, striking out four and walking one.

    University 4, Coal Ridge 3, in Delta: University wrapped up its campaign in Delta’s home tournament with this tight win. Sophomore Max Davis led a balanced Bulldogs offense, hitting 2 for 3 with one RBI. Senior Will Korby pitched 6 1/3 innings, allowing one earned run on three hits, striking out 10 and walking six. University improved to 3-2 overall.

    Platte Valley 3, Bennett 1, in Bennett: Platte Valley secured this nonleague defensive-minded affair to improve to 2-1 on the season. Junior Logan Hackett led the Broncos offensively, hitting 2 for 2 with two RBI, two runs and a double. Junior Hazen Weber went the distance for Platte Valley, allowing one earned run on three hits, striking out five and walking four.

    Dayspring Christian 16, Holly 1, 4 inn., in Fowler: Dayspring Christian closed its 2-1 run in Fowler’s home tournament with this lopsided win. The Eagles out-hit Holly 11-3. Senior Logan Vaniddekinge had seven RBI, two home runs and three runs on 2-for-3 hitting for Dayspring. Senior Josiah Rodriguez pitched all four innings, allowing one earned run on three hits, striking out eight and walking one. The Eagles improved to 2-1 on the season.

    Resurrection Christian splits games, in Phoenix: Resurrection Christian wrapped up its three-day campaign in the Coach Bob Invitational with a 15-7 win against Mount St. Mary (Oklahoma City, Okla.) and a 19-7 loss to Canyon View (Waddell, Ariz.). Sophomore Colton Barber and senior Weston Johnson each had three RBI in the win against Mount St. Mary. The Cougars moved their record to 3-3.

    Alameda 18, Greeley Central 5, in Fort Morgan: Greeley Central was unable to close out its campaign in Fort Morgan’s home tournament with a win, falling to 1-5 on the season. Freshman Angel Lopez-Meza continued to swing the bat well, hitting 2 for 3 with two runs and a double.

    Northridge drops two, in Fort Morgan: Northridge lost two more games to wrap up its run in Fort Morgan’s home tournament, falling 9-1 to Alameda and 12-8 to The Academy. Grizzlies senior Pedro Avila hit 3 for 4 with three RBI, two doubles and a home against The Academy. Northridge fell to 0-5 on the season.

    Haxtun 17, Highland 10, in Haxtun: Highland fell for the first time in this young season, dropping to 1-2 overall. The Huskies led off and on, going up 8-6 before giving up seven runs in the bottom of the fifth. Junior Stetson Hendren hit 2 for 2 with four RBI, three runs, a double and a home run for Highland. Freshman Byron Berkheimer hit 1 for 3 with three RBI.

    Valley goes 0-2, in Fort Morgan: Valley wrapped up its trip to Fort Morgan for the Mustangs’ home tournament with a 10-5 loss to Fort Morgan and a 12-2 loss to Vista PEAK Prep. In their first game, the Vikings scored four runs in the top of the sixth to take a brief 5-3 lead. However, the Mustangs stormed right back with seven runs in the bottom of the sixth. Juniors Seth Kissler and Ivan Saenz each had a RBI. Valley trailed from beginning to end against Vista PEAK. Junior Trent Mestas and senior Andrew Renken had the Vikings only RBI. Valley fell to 1-3 overall.

    Prairie suffers sweep, in New Raymer: Prairie was unable to pick up a win in a season-opening doubleheader against Sedgwick County. The Mustangs fell 9-5 in the first game and 15-7 in Game 2.

    Track and field

    Teams compete in Runners Roost, in Fort Collins: Numerous local teams converged on French Field for the annual Runners Roost of Fort Collins Invite, featuring 33 total teams. Among the local highlights, Roosevelt senior Jayden Nohr won the boys long jump with a distance of 21 feet, 5 inches. Severance sophomore Jonah Beck was third (21′ 0.5″) in the same event.

    Roosevelt senior Isaiah Sprague was first in the boys 50 (8.14). Frontier Academy junior Matthew Hayden was the runner-up in the boys 3,200 (9:43.73). Roosevelt freshman David Roberts was third in the boys 1,600 (4:30.25). His sophomore Rough Riders teammate, Owen Hays, was third in the boys 110 hurdles (14.98).

    Northridge was third in the boys 400 relay (44.40). Roosevelt was first (1:31.12) in the boys 800 relay, while Resurrection Christian was third (1:32.46) in that same event. Severance senior Grayson Smith was second in boys pole vault (13′). Roosevelt junior Tayber Konrad won boys shot put (52′ 11″).

    Eaton sophomore Delaney Reuter was second in the girls 800 (2:24.46) and second in the 3,200 (10:34.98). Severance sophomore Zeta Gattis was third in the girls 300 hurdles (50.32). Resurrection Christian was third in the girls 400 relay (51.56). Eaton was third in the girls 800 relay (1:51.76).

    Resurrection Christian senior Addison Barker won the girls long jump (16′ 11.75″). Roosevelt senior Taegan Olson won girls pole vault (12′). Eaton sophomore Jayda Warehime was third in girls shot put (34′ 0.5″).
