NotchNook Mac App REVIEW

Turn your MacBook’s notch into a productivity hub

I hate wasted space. This is one of the reasons that I really enjoy the Dynamic Island feature on my iPhone. It takes the odd ‘notch’ space and turns it into something useful. This useful feature isn’t natively available on macOS devices, but some third-party developers have created utility apps that make it possible to have a Dynamic Island on your macOS computer. One such app is NotchNook.

About NotchNook

NotchNook is a sleek and intuitive macOS utility designed to enhance your workspace by making the most of the MacBook’s notch area. Whether you want to personalize your desktop, optimize your menu bar layout, or add useful visual enhancements, NotchNook seamlessly integrates with your system to improve your experience. NotchNook helps you turn an often-overlooked space into a functional and aesthetic element of your Mac setup.

NotchNook repurposes the MacBook notch, much like Apple’s Dynamic Island, by turning unused space into something functional and visually engaging. It’s designed for designers and developers who appreciate pixel-perfect aesthetics. Built using Swift and SwiftUI, NotchNook delivers a seamless, lightweight experience.

    Main Features

Notch Customization – Blend, hide, or accentuate the notch to match your style. Menu Bar Management – Reorganize and declutter your menu bar for a cleaner look. Dynamic Visuals – Apply creative wallpapers and effects that interact with the notch. Lightweight & Efficient – Designed to run smoothly without impacting system performance.

    Pricing and Availability

NotchNook can be downloaded from the developer at lo.cafe for a $3/month subscription fee (2 devices) or a one-time purchase of $25 (5 devices). Users can also find it using Setapp.

    Privacy Policy

NotchNook only collects the necessary information including email address, license information, and the machine serial number. This information is only collected so that NotchNook can provide services to users. The full policy can be found here.

    Other Apps from the Developer

lo.cafe has several other projects available including:

lo-rain → a macos app that makes it rain no matter where you are, even over your apps (soon) PillBell → an upcoming ios medication app with enough delicious animations to drive everyone mad (soon) Damage → a macos app that makes it easy to sign, notarize and create DMGs (soon) Winston → a beautiful and native Reddit client for iOS Artemis → a beautiful and native accountless Reddit client for iOS

    Customer Service

The developer can be reached via email ([[email protected]](mailto:[email protected]@lo.cafe)) or by joining their discord server. While I was working on this review, I discovered that lo.cafe’s website was down. So, I popped into the Discord Server to alert them and one of the moderators responded stating that they were aware and thanked me for sending up the red flag. I got this response less than 5 minutes after I posted the message. I think having a Discord Server — provided you have active moderators — is a great option for offering customer service for apps.

    User Experience

As noted above, NotchNook is not available in the Mac App Store — only in Setapp or directly from the developer’s website. Once it’s been downloaded, you will launch the app and apply the requested permissions (Accessibility/Screen Recording. That’s pretty much it for the installation process. The real magic of NotchNook comes from how a use tweaks the application for their preferences.

    Personalizing NotchNook

While the default experience is already well-designed, taking the time to fine-tune NotchNook makes it even better. One of the standout aspects of the app is its flexibility—you can adjust which widgets appear, how they’re displayed, and even resize certain UI elements to fit your needs.

For example, my personal setup includes the media player, calendar, and notes widgets. These tools are always within reach but don’t clutter my screen or get in the way of my workflow. I also noticed that Quick Apps and To-Dos are labeled as ‘coming soon’ in the widget selection menu. That’s an exciting addition because having a discreet yet accessible way to track tasks would be a game-changer for productivity.

Another aspect I appreciate is widget sizing and display control. NotchNook lets you adjust the size of individual widgets and menu bar elements, such as the Tray, making it easy to strike a balance between visibility and minimalism.

It’s clear that the developers are actively working on improvements, and with frequent updates, NotchNook continues to evolve. My favorite feature by far is its ability to provide quick access to essential utilities without being intrusive. It integrates seamlessly into my Mac workflow, making tools and information available when I need them—without becoming a distraction.

One note I want to make is that as much as I like NotchNook, it seems as though there may be some compatibility issues with the current beta release of macOS. As of March 23, 2025, it was reported in the Lo.Cafe Discord Server that the current macOS version broke APIs and this was causing some of the functions of NotchNook to malfunction. This is something that is being actively worked on according to the moderators in Discord.

    Conclusion

NotchNook is an excellent example of how third-party developers can enhance the macOS experience by making use of an otherwise overlooked design element—the MacBook’s notch. It transforms dead space into a functional, customizable area that integrates seamlessly with the system while maintaining a lightweight and aesthetically pleasing design.

Its ability to display useful widgets without cluttering the workspace makes it an appealing choice for designers, developers, and productivity-focused users. While the app is already well-polished, ongoing improvements and new widget additions make it even more promising.
