The Shipyard, a Columbus, Ohio-based advertising agency operating in San Diego, has relocated its downtown offices from 624 Broadway to 185 W. F St. The company also said in an announcement that the San Diego office has been designated as the agency’s California headquarters.

Tammy Haughey, managing partner, oversees California operations for The Shipyard, which also operates offices in Sacramento and Newport Beach. Haughey, promoted to managing partner in April 2024, is now in her 38th year of working in the advertising agency business with much of her career in key executive roles serving travel, tourism and hospitality clients.

“We are doubling down on our investment in California because this state is the center of creativity and innovation,” said Rick Milenthal, CEO, The Shipyard.

A spokesperson said The Shipyard’s Sacramento office opened in July 1985, and the Newport Beach office opened in 2014, with the acquisition of Townsend O’Leary. The San Diego office opened in December 2020, with the acquisition of Mering, an ad agency founded in Dave Mering in July 1985. Haughey had worked with Mering since 2007 and continued with The Shipyard.

“Under managing partner Tammy Haughey’s leadership, now is the perfect time to grow and elevate our presence in San Diego. We’re excited to extend our ties to this vibrant business community,” Milenthal said.

“Since our founding, we’ve grown our business with creativity at the core of everything we do, always innovating and delivering exceptional work for our clients.”

The agency’s West Coast clients include California Grown, In-N-Out, Mammoth Lakes Tourism, San Diego County Regional Airport Authority, San Diego Gas & Electric, San Diego Tourism Authority, San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance, San Francisco Ballet, Snowbird, St. John’s Health, Veloz, Visit Napa Valley, Visit SLO CAL and Visit California.

“Like the shipbuilders working across the San Diego Bay’s working waterfront, the crew at The Shipyard are relentless creators and problem-solvers dedicated to engineering brand love across all consumer touchpoints,” said Haughey. “San Diego represents the perfect environment for our agency to flourish as we continue to work alongside our clients and positively contribute to enhancing quality of life in this place we call home.”

The Shipyard has been recognized by AdWeek as a national Fastest-Growing Agency and the 2023 and 2024 Best Mid-Sized Agency nationally by the Public Relations Society of America. The agency also operates offices in Denver, Miami, Chicago, New York City, Boise, Idaho and Cleveland and Dayton, Ohio.

Bryce Miller, Union-Tribune Sports Columnist, Dies at 56

A GoFundMe account is accepting memorial contributions in honor of Bryce Miller, sports columnist with The San Diego Union-Tribune, who passed away March 22.

    He was 56.

Miller was diagnosed with muscle-invasive bladder cancer two years ago, and continued to write for the newspaper while undergoing treatment. As of press deadline, more than $57,000 had been raised.

Brian Miller, Bryce’s brother, wrote on GoFundMe, “Bryce’s cancer diagnosis in 2023 was a devastating shock. He has faced this journey with remarkable courage, but the reality of this illness is unrelenting. He has been hospitalized at Kaiser Permanente San Diego Medical Center since February 26, and our family is focused on keeping him as comfortable as possible through his treatment, testing, and care.

“Cancer treatment is not only emotionally and physically exhausting, it also comes with an overwhelming financial burden. Mounting medical bills, ongoing treatments, medications, and daily care expenses have placed a tremendous strain on Bryce and his loved ones. Despite these collective efforts, Team Miller cannot shoulder this burden alone.

“We created this GoFundMe to rally around Bryce and his caregivers, ensuring they have the resources to focus on his care rather than financial stress. Every dollar raised will go directly toward medical expenses and meeting Bryce’s needs during this difficult time.”

His biography on the U-T website said Miller covered six Olympics, the World Series and MLB All-Star Game, Final Four, Kentucky Derby, Preakness Stakes, college football championship game, Rose Bowl, NFL playoffs, U.S. Open and PGA Championship, among other national events.

Assignments included trips to Mexico City, the Dominican Republic and Seoul, South Korea, to cover the Padres; Eritrea, Africa, to trace the childhood roots of Boston Marathon winner and Olympian Meb Keflezighi; and Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, to chronicle the world’s richest fishing tournament.

The U-T’s obituary, written by the Union-Tribune’s sports editor Ryan Finley, said Miller’s coverage of the 2017 Lilac fire, which killed 46 horses at San Luis Rey Downs and burned their caretakers, earned him the 2019 Eclipse Award, given annually to the best horse racing writing by the National Thoroughbred Racing Association.

Finley wrote, “In an age where media personalities often manufacture outrage to attract listeners and clicks, Miller opted for understanding. His writing was poetic and nuanced and, reflecting the columnist’s personality, never reactionary.”

Miller graduated from the University of Iowa and worked for the Des Moines Register and with USA Today in Arlington, Va., before heading west to San Diego. He joined the U-T in October 2015.

Miller is survived by his brothers, Brian and Bruce, and a sister-in-law, Melissa; his mother, Bea Winters; and friends in Iowa, Kensington and beyond.

    Services are pending.
