The only thing I don’t like about these windows is the fact that you have to manually raise and lower the shades and I’ve really wanted smart shades for a very long time. There are many different variations that can be added on that affect the price such as valance style and whether or not you want a solar panel. They are also available on Amazon starting at $174.99. Because the shades are custom-made orders, it takes up to 5 days for an order to ship.

User Experience

The shades arrive in neatly packed, branded boxes. Even though the process of setup can be daunting, SmartWings keeps the installation hassle-free by including easy-to-follow instructions and by having all the parts organized.

Installation is straightforward and can typically be completed in under 30 minutes. Begin by mounting the brackets to the wall or ceiling using the included hardware. Once securely in place, snap the roller shade into position on the brackets. For battery-powered models, ensure the built-in battery is fully charged before use, while wired models can be plugged directly into an outlet. Next, follow the instructions to pair the shade with the remote control and any compatible smart home apps. Finally, complete the setup by integrating the shade with your preferred smart home system, such as Alexa, Google Assistant, or Apple HomeKit, using the provided QR codes or manual instructions.

One of my shades came with a solar charger, which I placed on the window as instructed (it comes with adhesive on one side). The solar charger connects to the shade with a USB-C cable and as long as the place you select gets good sunlight, it will power the shade. I did run into one issue where we had a few days of cloudy/rainy weather and the shade lost power. I connected it to a portable battery and recharged it so it would be operational again.

Once the installation was complete, I started testing them. Our smart assistant of choice is Apple HomeKit and I didn’t run into any issues connecting the shades to our home. There have only been a couple of times where the shades were detecting since installation and I believe it’s because the one shade lost power. I grouped the shades together so that I could tell Siri, “Open Shades,” or “Close Shades,” and they will both operate at the same time. I discovered that one inevitably opens or closes slightly before the other but it’s usually only a second or two out of sync.

The motors are very quiet and you really only hear a small hum when the shades open or close. One thing I will point out is that you can’t stop the shades if you are operating them with your smart assistant. You can only open or close them 100%. If you are using the remote, you do have that kind of control. It would be nice if you could ask your smart assistant to open them 50% or 25%, but they just don’t work that way.

You can choose an inner or outer installation option depending on your window frame and window style. We have horizontal sliding windows so we opted for the outer installation. Unfortunately, the measurement was off and the shade is just a bit shy of the bottom of the window frame. The entire window is still covered, but the frame is exposed. I also think the shade is a bit offset because of the placement of the motor but there is no good way to overcome that.

All in all, I’ve been very happy with the smart shades. They make my office feel complete, adding both style and functionality to the space.
