Emma Raducanu’s two-week coach says ‘stress and pressure’ ended partnership

Vladimir Platenik admits his coaching trial with Emma Raducanu ended “maybe too quickly” and said the Briton was “feeling stressed” when making her decision.

Raducanu teamed up with Platenik ahead of Indian Wells, where she lost in the opening round to Moyuka Uchijima earlier this month.

Platenik, 49, was then absent from the 22-year-old’s corner at the Miami Open, with Raducanu winning her first-round match against Sayaka Ishii on Wednesday.

Raducanu did not believe the relationship was heading in the right direction, meaning her hunt for a new permanent coach resumes.

“I totally understand Emma, she’s not in an easy position. The world is looking at her after the US Open [which she won in 2021] and everybody is expecting – including herself – what she is going to do next,” Platenik told BBC Sport.

“So for me it’s absolutely understandable that she’s under a lot of pressure. She told me she was feeling stressed.

“There are no hard feelings from my side. She finished the relationship in a fair way, maybe too quickly, but this is tennis, this is sport. We need to respect that.

“She was not feeling okay, and that was her decision. I didn’t want to go into deeper communication about that. I think the player needs to feel good, and the player needs to make a decision. Sometimes you make a good decision, and sometimes bad.”

Platenik joined Raducanu’s team after her difficult stalking ordeal, and the trial period was expected to last longer than two weeks.

It is also believed Raducanu tried to hire Platenik several times previously in her career but was unable to agree terms with the Slovakian.

Platenik has previously worked with Daria Kasatkina, Veronika Kudermetova, Anna Blinkova and Lulu Sun, and though his stint with Raducanu was brief, he was pleased to see some of his advice rub off in Miami.

“I was very happy because I really must say that I never had a player improving that fast – in eight, nine days,” he added.

“She was getting a lot of things very fast. And I think it also showed in the first round [victory over Sayaka Ishii in Miami]. She was playing very correct, technically and tactically – exactly what we were practising, so I’m happy and I hope that she could take something out of my help.”

Raducanu is next in action on Friday afternoon against eighth seed Emma Navarro.

The British No 2 will have long-time confidante and coach Jane O’Donoghue in her corner.

Raducanu trained on Thursday with O’Donoghue, who watched Wednesday’s win with LTA women’s tennis national coach Colin Beecher and Raducanu’s full-time fitness trainer Yutaka Nakamura, who was appointed in December.
