Oakland hills carjacking suspect drives to Hayward but arrested when he drives back to area of the heist

OAKLAND — With ground and air law enforcement units pursuing him, a suspect in an Oakland hills carjacking Wednesday evening drove to Hayward and back to near where the heist happened, causing a loud commotion in the Montclair Village area.

He was arrested after abandoning the stolen vehicle and trying to flee on foot, authorities said.

Authorities said the wild events started about 5:20 p.m. Wednesday in the 6400 block of Snake Road above Montclair Village when the 34-year-old suspect who was wearing a mask simulated a gun and stole a Honda belonging to a 35-year-old man.

Oakland police officers on foot spotted the Honda a short time later in the 500 block of 98th avenue and began using surveillance cameras to track it to the area of Mission Boulevard and Grove Way in Hayward, where they began pursuing the driver, authorities said.

Despite getting into a minor collision with another vehicle, the suspect continued driving.

Alameda County sheriff’s deputies and that agency’s helicopter joined in the pursuit with Oakland officers, which went onto westbound Interstate 580, then Highway 13 before the suspect took the Thornhill Drive exit and kept driving into the hills at high speed. The pursuing deputies and officers kept their distance as the vehicle was being tracked by the helicopter, authorities said

A resident walking his dog on Thornhill who saw the pursuit said the suspect was running stop signs and “driving extra crazy” on the windy roads.

Authorities said the suspect drove past where the carjacking happened before driving on to Krohn Lane, a cul-de-sac off of Snake Road, where he abandoned the vehicle and fled on foot into brushy areas.

Numerous police officers and deputies set up a perimeter and a California Highway Patrol aircraft took over for the sheriff’s helicopter to help coordinate the ground search. Several residents alerted police to the man’s movements as well.

The man was taken into custody about 7 p.m. Police are still trying to determine why the man drove back to Oakland.

He was being held without bail at Santa Rita Jail on suspicion of carjacking and possession of a stolen vehicle and for violating probation in a 2023 stolen vehicle case. He is scheduled to be arraigned Friday.
