Orange County Republican Matt Gunderson, who lost to Democratic Rep. Mike Levin in the 49th Congressional district last year, has announced that he won’t run for that office again in 2026.

Instead, the car dealership owner says he plans to focus on voter identification laws, claiming in a statement that a “red wave” in California — a promised Republican sweep of offices all over the state that never materialized — was thwarted by Democratic dysfunction.

Gunderson said he plans to focus his political energies on passing statewide voter identification laws.

“I see the real problem up close. California’s election system is broken,” said Gunderson in a statement, citing a “glaring” need for reform.

“Good candidates can’t fix bad election practices.  We must fix that first.  Voter ID isn’t just a nice-to-have, it’s the bedrock of fair elections. I’m doubling down to make it happen, because trust is non-negotiable.”

Gunderson lost by five points to Levin in the 2024 general election.

He also challenged Democrat Catherine Blakespear in the race for the 38th State Senate District, which straddles San Diego and Orange counties as well. He lost that race in 2022 by four points.
