High school sports results (Tuesday): Highland flexes offensive muscles in baseball season opener

Highland 23, Byers 2, 4 inn., in Byers: Highland was red hot offensively in its season-opening affair. The game was tied at 2 before the Huskies scored 20 runs in the top of the fourth. Highland out-hit Byers 16-1. Senior Sawyer Morgan led the way hitting 4 for 5 with seven RBI, five runs, two triples and a home run. Junior Stetson Hendren went 3 for 5 with three RBI, three runs and a double. Huskies senior John Bingley was impressive on the mound, allowing two unearned runs on one hit, striking out 10 and walking three.

Weld Central 13, Aurora Central 3, 5 inn., in Keenesburg: Weld Central won its third consecutive game and improved to 3-2 overall. Trailing 2-0 midway through the fourth, the Rebels quickly took control, scoring seven runs in the bottom of the fourth and six more runs in the fifth. Weld Central out-hit Aurora Central 15-5. Junior Lucas Johann led the Rebels, hitting 2 for 4 with three RBI, two runs and a home run. Senior Ross Phelps went 2 for 3 with two RBI, two runs and a double. Johann pitched all five innings, allowing two earned runs on five hits, striking out five and walking three.

    Pueblo Central 18, Northridge 7, 5 inn., in Greeley: Northridge couldn’t slow down Pueblo Central’s offensive barrage, as the Grizzlies fell to 0-2 on the season. The Wildcats started fast, leading 9-2 after one inning and 13-2 after two. Despite the loss, sophomore Ruger Lancaster and senior Joel Vasquez had two RBI apiece for the Grizzlies.

    Holy Family 8, University 5, in Broomfield: University fell to 0-2 with this loss in a battle of longtime baseball powerhouses. The Bulldogs found themselves in a sizable early hole after Holy Family scored five runs in the bottom of the second. The Tigers extended their lead to 8-0 before University scored four runs in the sixth and one more in the seventh. Seniors Will Korby, Medardo Abrego and Preston Natividad each drove in a run for University.

    Girls soccer

    Broomfield 1, Windsor 0, in Windsor: Windsor fell just inches short in this tightly contested nonconference affair. Broomfield scored the game’s only goal in the first half. The Wizards fell to 2-2 overall.

    Boys volleyball

    Severance 3, Windsor Charter 0, in Windsor: Severance snapped a three-match losing streak and improved to 5-6 overall, 2-0 in 4A Northern Conference play. The Silver Knights won 25-11, 25-17, 25-14. Windsor Charter fell to 2-3, 0-2.
