THE Pittsburgh Steelers are reportedly close to deciding on their quarterback situation.
The Steelers’ eventual announcement will come down to what the 41-year-old Aaron Rodgers plans on doing in his first-ever free agency decision.
On Tuesday, NFL insider Josina Anderson reported that the Steelers are “getting closer” to a resolution about who will lead the offense in 2025.
Anderson added that Pittsburgh’s optimism “pertained to Aaron Rodgers.”
The latest report comes after ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler reported over the weekend that the Steelers and New York Giants have sent “standing offers” to Rodgers.
The Minnesota Vikings have also been linked to Rodgers, but the franchise isn’t looking to add the four-time NFL MVP “at this time”, per NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero.
Pittsburgh has been in the Rodgers sweepstakes since the league tampering period began last week.
It appears that Rodgers has only been interested in the Vikings’ job as ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported Tuesday on his podcast that the 20-year NFL veteran has “balked” at the Steelers and the Giants interest and “resisted their overtures.”
The Giants had a dreadful 2024 3-14 campaign and currently own the No. 3 pick in the upcoming NFL Draft
As for the Steelers, they are coming off a 10-7 season in which they made the playoffs for the fourth time in five seasons.
However, the franchise has a current five-game losing streak in the postseason.
Pittsburgh was led by quarterbacks Justin Fields and Russell Wilson last year.
The 26-year-old Fields has since signed with the New York Jets and the 36-year-old nine-time Pro Bowler Wilson remains unsigned.
The Steelers brought back former 2018 third-round pick quarterback Mason Rudolph, who wasn’t interested in the Giants whom he was scheduled to meet with before returning to the black and gold.
The potential addition of Rodgers would give the Mike Tomlin-led squad a starting quarterback, but they shouldn’t be expecting a vintage season from the future first-ballot Hall of Famer.
Rodgers was released by the New York Jets last week after two disappointing seasons with Gang Green.
The Green Bay Packers legend recorded 3,897 yards and 28 passing touchdowns, which is third in Jets franchise history.
However, Rodgers was 30th in completion percentage and 25th in total QBR.
The 10-time Pro Bowler likely won’t be a significant upgrade over Wilson, who is still linked with Steel City.
The Steelers could also look to draft their next quarterback in the upcoming draft.
They have the No. 21 overall pick in the first round and reportedly met with Alabama Crimson Tide quarterback Jalen Milroe on Tuesday.
