Setup & Installation
I downloaded Unclutter from the App Store so my installation process was automatic. If you choose to download it directly from the Unclutter website you will receive a DMG file that needs to be opened and then ejected. The app file will also need to be placed into the system’s Applications folder.
When you open the app for the first time, you will walk through the preferences and decide how you want to activate Unclutter. I decided to use the scroll option. So when I hover over the top area of my screen and scroll downward, the tray appears. Unclutter may ask for certain permissions to be granted for all the features to be unlocked. I simply followed the on-screen instructions to grant the permissions. Once these steps are completed you can start using Unclutter regularly.
User Experience
Throughout my day I am constantly task-switching and different types of ‘to-do’ items are thrown at me. I’m always looking for ways to keep those tasks in a single place. Unclutter gives me that option with the Notes area. It’s always there when I need it but hidden when I don’t. I love that you can enable or disable sections as you need to. I don’t feel like I always need the Files drop zone open 100% of the time so I typically keep it disabled. This cleans up the Unclutter drawer so I can focus on the items I need.
One thing I wish was a little better was the customization options for the drawer. Right now, there are light and dark mode settings, but I would love to see additional color options so that the sections could stand out more. It would also be nice to see a sticky note area. For example, a drawer section could hold many smaller notes so that you could move them around as priorities change and you could remove them as you complete tasks. I’d also like to see the notes area be rich text capable.
In general, Unclutter offers a lot in the ways of productivity help and I’ve used it quite a bit to help throughout my day. Whether it’s quickly retrieving something from my clipboard history, jotting down a quick note without opening another app or keeping temporary files accessible without cluttering my desktop, Unclutter has streamlined my workflow in a noticeable way. Its seamless integration into macOS makes it feel like a natural extension of the system rather than a separate app, and the ability to customize its behavior ensures it fits my specific needs. It’s one of those small yet powerful tools that, once you start using it, you wonder how you ever worked without it.
Conclusion
Unclutter is a powerful yet simple productivity tool that helps keep your Mac organized by providing instant access to notes, clipboard history, and frequently used files. Its intuitive design and seamless integration with macOS make it an excellent choice for anyone looking to streamline their workflow. While it may not be packed with advanced features, its lightweight nature and ease of use make it a valuable addition for those who want quick, clutter-free access to essential items.
