The release of Serum 2 by Xfer Records marks a significant advancement in the realm of digital sound synthesis, particularly for users of its acclaimed wavetable synthesizer. This major update introduces a multitude of new oscillator types, including granular, spectral, and multi-sample engines, thereby broadening the sound design capabilities available to users . The inclusion of these innovative synthesis methods allows for greater creative expression and manipulation of audio samples. Furthermore, enhancements to existing features such as smooth wavetable interpolation elevate the overall user experience.
The most significant change in Serum 2 is the introduction of multiple oscillator engines. While the original focused primarily on wavetable synthesis, the new version brings multi-samples, granular synthesis, sample-based oscillators, and spectral synthesis. This diverse range of synthesis methods enables users to create more complex and dynamic sounds.
The sample and multi-sample engines include classic sampler features such as looping with snap detection, flexible loop modulation, tape-stop effects, real-time sample slicing, and FM/PD/Distortion capabilities. The spectral oscillator offers real-time harmonic resynthesis and transient detection, allowing for more intricate sound-shaping possibilities.
The biggest new feature in Serum 2 is the Oscillator section, which now includes several new sound synthesis methods. In addition to the improved Wavetable Oscillator, which has become even more flexible with new warp modes, phase distortion and dual warp functions, there is now a multisample oscillator. This allows you to imitate realistic instruments with an extensive library of orchestral, piano and guitar samples in the open SFZ format.
Serum 2 is a significant, free update transforming the original wavetable synth into a versatile multi-engine instrument. Key additions include a spectral engine with spectral filtering and an integrated arp/sequencer. This major upgrade is free for existing Serum 1 users (released in 2014). Kudos to Steve and Xfer Records for this impressive update.
Serum 2 is available now for $189 (introductory price, regularly $249). It runs as a 64-bit VST3, AU, and AAX plugin and includes lifetime free updates.
In addition to new oscillators, Serum 2 incorporates an overhauled modulation section that presents novel LFO modes and expanded mixing workflows. The introduction of four additional macro controls enhances user interactivity with the synthesizer's parameters. Moreover, the update includes an extensive library featuring 626 new presets and 288 fresh wavetables, which collectively provide users with a rich source for inspiration and experimentation . Consequently, Serum 2 not only solidifies its position as a leading tool in electronic music production but also encourages continuous innovation in sound design.
