Renowned sportscaster Dick Vitale's appearance at the ACC championship basketball game on March 15 became more emotional than expected when he started talking about his tough cancer battles from the past few years.
Vitale wore a headset as he sat between ESPN's Dave O'Brien and Cory Alexander at the match between the Duke Blue Devils and the Louisville Cardinals. He commented, "It's been like, to me, a miracle to sit here with you guys. I can't tell you how much you've meant to me," getting more emotional as he spoke.

"It's been unbelievable. A tough three years. Those four cancer battles," Vitale went on, talking about his recent health struggles. "I don't wish it on anybody. Cancer sucks.”
Touching on his possible future in sports commentating, the 85-year-old said, “It's my last game this year and I'm praying, hopefully, I can be back next year, maybe even better. I hope and pray my doctor really helps me with my voice.”

Vitale's voice has gotten raspier recently as he dealt with multiple cancer battles. Last year, he had surgery to remove cancerous lymph nodes and had radiation treatments for vocal cord cancer. A few years ago, he was also diagnosed with and received treatment for lymphoma and melanoma.
Fans shared appreciation and support for Vitale in the comments of ESPN's video, such as one who said, "Dicky V ?#Legendary #HallofFamer The voice of College Basketball."
"Nothing but love for the legend ?," said another, as a third wrote, "Seriously just the best. Brings a tear to your eye."
A former college and NBA basketball coach, Vitale began his career in broadcasting in 1979, just after ESPN first launched, and quickly became a household name.
