High school basketball state semifinals roundup (Friday): University girls, Resurrection Christian boys and girls punch tickets to title games

No. 1 Resurrection Christian 49 vs. No. 5 Centauri 31, in Denver: Resurrection Christian dominated on defense at the University of Denver to coast into the 3A finals. The Cougars improved to 27-0 and will face No. 3 Strasburg (23-4) in the title game at 2 p.m. Saturday back at the University of Denver. Resurrection Christian is no stranger to title games. This will be its fifth title game appearance, its third in as many years. The Cougars are the defending 4A champion. Strasburg, meanwhile, is playing in its first title game in program history. This will be the third meeting this season between Resurrection Christian and the Indians. The Cougars defeated Strasburg 67-51 on Jan. 24 in Strasburg and 55-34 on Feb. 26 in Loveland. Resurrection Christian placed first and the Indians were fourth in the 3A Patriot League during the regular season.

    No. 3 Strasburg 54, No. 2 Windsor Charter 46, in Denver: A big second quarter only temporarily turned the tide for Windsor Charter in this 3A semifinals game at the University of Denver. Strasburg led 15-7 after one quarter. The Firebirds gained a 26-20 halftime lead after outscoring the Indians 19-5 in the second quarter. Strasburg wasted no time snatching the lead, and the momentum, back for good, outscoring Windsor Charter 20-13 in the third quarter and 14-7 in the fourth. The Firebirds ended their strong season with a 24-3 record.

    Girls basketball

    No. 1 University 53, No. 4 Holy Family 45, in Denver: University fended off one of its most formidable challenges all season to punch its ticket into its third state finals appearance in program history, its first at the 4A level. The Bulldogs led early, 19-15 after one quarter, but Holy Family clawed back, tying the game at 30 at halftime in this 4A semifinals game at the Denver Coliseum. University inched back ahead, 41-39 through three quarters before creating just a little more separation with a 12-6 run in the fourth quarter. Senior Janay Kravig shined for the Bulldogs offensively, scoring 19 points on 5-of-8 shooting to go with three assists and a steal. Fellow standout senior Addison Harding added nine points, 13 rebounds and three blocks. University improved to 27-0 and will face sixth-seeded Delta (21-6) in the title game at 10 a.m. Saturday back at the Denver Coliseum. The Panthers are riding a 16-game win streak and are playing in their first title game in program history. They upset No. 2 Timnath 56-46 in the other semifinals game Friday.

    No. 1 Resurrection Christian 39, No. 5 Colorado Springs Christian 31, in Denver: Resurrection Christian prevailed in this defensive-minded 3A semifinals affair at the University of Denver, punching its ticket to its first title game appearance in program history. The Cougars led just 21-18 at halftime and 30-29 after three quarters. Resurrection Christian held Colorado Springs Christian to just two points in the decisive fourth quarter. Senior Callie Gillespie was the Cougars’ only double-digit scorer. Resurrection Christian improved to 25-2 and will face No. 3 Denver Christian in the title game at noon Saturday back at the University of Denver. The Thunder (26-1) have won 19 consecutive games. Its only loss this season came on Dec. 21 against Colorado Springs Christian.This is Denver Christian’s fourth title game appearance, its first since 2006. It has never won a girls hoops state title.

    No. 7 Evangel Christian Academy 61, No. 6 Briggsdale 50, in Greeley: A day after losing 40-27 to Eads in a 1A championship quarterfinals game at Bank of Colorado Arena, Briggsdale ended its season with this consolation bracket loss. The Falcons entered the postseason as the two-time defending 1A champion. They wrap up their season with an 18-8 record.
