The Denver Broncos free agency signings have been sensational.
GM George Paton has given Sean Payton capable players at many different positions of need. And more than capable; a former All-Pro, a Pro Bowler, and a do-it-all linebacker.
But many of the new guys came at a steep price and are coming off of injury-shortened seasons.
Denver Broncos free agency signings have brought in exciting players
When he talked to Kay Adams the week of the Super Bowl, Sean Payton said his Broncos needed a “joker,” a linebacker, and a safety. Then he and George Paton signed excellent, exciting players at all three positions in tight end Evan Engram, Dre Greenlaw, and Talanoa Hufanga.
When looking at those three splash signings, two things stick out: They have all been dominant, and all of them are coming off injuries.
However you want to slice it, they’re all gambles to a certain degree. And Greenlaw–arguably the biggest signing of the trio–is the biggest gamble of all.
That’s because he tore his Achilles tendon running onto the field during Super Bowl LVIII in Feb. 2024. He rehabbed, then played two games late for the 49ers, before being shut down due to calf soreness. For Greenlaw, like with any football player, health is crucial to his success.
Let’s quickly grade the Denver Broncos free agency signings from the first week of the new league year:
Dre Greenlaw, ILB, B+
Greenlaw is the biggest question mark health-wise, but could be the most impactful of these free agents. He gives the Broncos a linebacker that can cover opposing tight ends and running backs out of the backfield, something Denver’s missed for years. He was the highest-rated linebacker by Pro Football Focus (21) of all free agents this year, with Zack Baun (23) landing a few spots behind him. The simple fact is if he’s healthy, and if he plays like he did in 2022 and 2023, Greenlaw will be a major upgrade in the middle.
Talonoa Hufanga, S, C+
Hufanga is a good, but not great, safety. He’s certainly an upgrade over P.J. Locke, and he gets the benefit of playing alongside Brandon Jones, who was the fifth-best safety last year per PFF. After being a First-Team All-Pro in 2022, Hufanga has gone through a torn ACL and then torn ligaments in his wrist the last two consecutive years, missing 17 games. If he reaches All-Pro level, this is an amazing pickup. But even if he plays just decent ball, Hufanga is a capable addition. His grade is also hurt by the $15M AAV contract. It’s a little steep for him.
Evan Engram, TE, A-
While Engram also missed time due to injury in 2024, his torn labrum is a less severe injury than an ACL or Achilles tear. There should be little worry that Engram can go the entire 2025 season, and if he does, the Broncos just signed their best tight end in at least five years. Last year, Bo Nix made the most of what he had on the outside, with veteran Courtland Sutton and the cast of young guys. Even if the Broncos don’t add another veteran receiver–which they should–Engram gives them a difference maker as a pass-catcher.
Trent Sherfield, WR, C-
Sherfield looks to be a special teams guy and very deep on the wide receiver depth chart.
Re-signed Players, B+
D.J. Jones is the most notable of the re-signed Broncos, and he was a great piece to keep around. Although, $13M AAV is a bit high for him, even if that is around the market for IDL currently. Players like Jarrett Stidham, Justin Strnad, Lucas Krull, Ja’Quan McMillian; they’re all smaller role guys that fit in well, and each were signed for team-friendly deals.
Denver’s likely not completely done in free agency yet, but they may be finished with splash players. Cooper Kupp was a player some thought was a possibility in Denver but he just signed with Seattle.
