NCIS: Sydney Stars Talk Revealing Hidden Secrets from DeShawn Jacksons Past in Tonights Episode

NCIS: Sydney isn’t the newest series in the franchise, but it does have its own unique take. Set in Australia, it shows off the beauty of Sydney (especially the harbor), the language differences from American English, and other local customs that add just the right amount of color.

But one thing that is similar to the mothership is the push-pull relationship between Special Agent DeShawn Jackson (Sean Sagar) and AFP Liaison Officer Constable Evie Cooper (Tuuli Narkle) that is reminiscent to that of Special Agent Tony DiNozzo (Michael Weatherly) and Ziva David (Cote de Pablo).

“It’s a joy because of the relationship that Sean and I have developed together,” Narkle tells Parade of the constant banter and teasing that Evie sends DeShawn's way. "We probably tone down the sarcasm slightly in our personal relationship. But we just amp it up on screen, so it’s just so much fun. And it wouldn’t be as much fun if Sean wasn’t so receiving of all of the shitt Evie gives him.”

The two have also become offscreen friends, which Sagar says helps them bring electricity to their scenes on-screen.

“Don’t get me wrong,” Sagar tells Parade. “DeShawn does cop a lot of stick [British for "to be criticized, often in an unfair way, or for something that is not your fault"]. But I think I’m copping the best stick from the best person possible. And I know deep down it’s all love. I know she loves DeShawn Jackson. So, in my head, I’m like, ‘It’s such a beautiful dynamic that we have on and off screen that allows us to bring those characters to life for the audience.'”

Tonight’s “Hell Weak” episode takes the team to a wellness retreat to investigate the alleged death by hanging of a former SEAL who is on holiday with several of his former teammates. When it turns out to be a murder rather than a suicide, DeShawn and Evie are tasked with staying at the resort to investigate. And the onion is peeled one more layer on DeShawn as we learn he previously trained to become a SEAL.

“It was a beautiful thing for DeShawn to come to terms with and understand that that’s what I’ve been through, and this is who I am,” Sagar says. “And it’s also a nice moment for Evie to understand and be like, ‘Well, I never knew this. You’ve always kept this quiet.’ And for the audience, I think, it’s going to be quite a shock for them to understand I’ve been through something that’s about becoming a Navy SEAL, aand how intense that can be mentally and physically. So, it goes more in-depth about who he is, what he’s been from, and again, more reason for Evie to come at him.”

As a result, the episode isn’t just about solving the murder, but it’s also about allowing viewers to go on this journey with DeShawn as he reveals more of his backstory to Evie. For Evie, it’s an opportunity to take that info and run with it.

“I think the fun thing about the onion’s being peeled is when it's your partner who is going through that process. Because a lot of times with these shows, you have a lot of banter with your partner,” Narkle says. “And I think all of this unveiling or character development just informs all of the banter and the relationships that we have with each other that I feel, hopefully, is being received by the audiences.”

It also is an opportunity to leave Sydney for an episode and head into one of the woodsier sections of Australia.

“That’s part of the joy and the fun for sure,” Narkle says. “I’m Australian, and I didn’t realize how much of Sydney I hadn’t tapped into since being a part of this project. It’s been crazy. And to get to show the Brits [Sagar and Olivia Swann, who plays Mackie are British] everything that we’ve got to offer here on set, it just adds to that. I feel like the electricity and the spark that we have is the Sydney landscape as a part of that.”

And Sagar adds, “It’s nice to show the world how beautiful this country is. It is incredible to be on set and be in these locations because it does add so much to the performance because you’re taken back by it. So in that moment, you can allow yourself to play with it. So yeah, it is incredible to film on locations that way.”
